We always use king size pillows even on our non king beds because they're more comfortable. My son with a twin bed has a king pillow! I buy extra white or blue king pillow cases because we can never use the twin or queen cases that come with the sheets. I'd just buy king size pillows that you use for decoration. They'll cover the queen bed so much nicer anyways!

Sorry that I misunderstood your question. I use king-sized pillows in pillowcases for sleeping. When I make my bed, I lay them flat at the head. I place a set of king-sized pillows in shams on top of the sleeping pillows so that the wrinkled pillow cases aren't showing. In front of those, I use a collection of pillows that changes depending on my mood and the season. Sometimes, I use three Euro pillows in decorative shams with a boudoir pillow in a decorative sham in front of those. Sometimes, I skip the Euro pillows and use two standard pillows in decorative shams with a boudoir or neckroll pillow in front. In a guest room, where I keep the sleeping pillows stored away in a dust-proof bag, I use the following sets of decorative pillows from the headboard forward: five Euros, two kings, three 18" squares and one boudoir. Clearly, that many decorative pillows would be onerous to arrange every day, but I love the look. When I have guests, I move all of the decorative pillows to storage and provide several types of sleeping pillows in cases.

Nanny2a from here made some items for me a few years back and I remember her suggesting to order pillows two inches larger than the covers. I did and am still SO VERY GLAD. It fills the covers and doesn't look skimpy. She also suggested this site for pillow forms (United Pillow - see link). They were inexpensive and you can order custom. @anglophilia, we have a lot of pillows too! I sleep on 2 and DH sleeps on 1-2 and hugs another. Right now my setup is awful, but I usually put 3 standards in back, topped with 2 kings, then 2 standard shams, then 1 accent. DH hates all the pillows, but we I use a king and standard and he uses all standards. It's such a mess to make the bed and look nice. I think with a setup like my mockup photo, I could hide our old smushy standard pillows behind the king shams if needed. Then add king pillows in white pillowcases, then a couple accent pillows. I want to break up the sham and duvet pattern since they are the same.
