Covering a chimney

Hi
I have a fireplace that we have and will never use. It has a metal chimney with a cap.

We have lived in the house for the past 7 years and have had wasps nest the chimney twice. We were considering closing it off but I've been told it can lead to moisture problems. We don't mind leaving it open we just dont want wasps. So I was thinking of covering the hole at the top with a metal mesh like door screen. It gets to a max of 30C in the summer here and as low as - 30C with snow. Does anyone forsee any problems with ice build up or anything if I do this?
Thanks
