Yahoo! I have worms!
Comments (4)Yesterday morning I was pulling out some of the more offensive weeds in my newly (April 05th of this year) renovated KBG front lawn when after pulling out the weed by the root a good ole-fashioned nightcrawler came out all twisting and writhing having being disturbed from his slumber. I figure since he was so close to the surface of the lawn I must have a rather thriving community in the lawn by this time. OMG, what if he was the only one and I killed him... :screams in horror: ;-p...See MoreI have no worms in my garden, should I buy some...
Comments (15)August 2001 Tiffy buys new property. April 2002 Tiffy's DH unable to find any worms on said property to go fishing after digging 14 holes. May 2002 Tiffy discovers S&C Forum and reads about used coffee grounds (UCGs) and composting and begins her quest. July 2002 Tiffy discovers a source for UCGs and starts picking up over 200 lbs per week. September 2002 Tiffy begins flinging UCGs on the lawn and in the new garden beds. Compost bins - 4 of them - were full. April 2003, DH digs 4 holes to acquire worms for fishing. Ucgs are flung throughout the summer and composted diligently with shredded leaves and seaweed and then applied to the gardens. June 2004, Tiffy shows DH that worms can be had by simply gently jiggling the base of her Coreopsis Domino plants. By doing so the worms will simply come out of the ground and the shovel can stay in the shed. The end......See MoreI have worms ...now what
Comments (3)Hello Melinda, welcome to the worm farming community! Running a worm farm might initially sound difficult but I promise you it is much easier than it sounds. It's never a good sign if lots of worms want to escape from a worm farm. This indicates that they are not happy with their surroundings. Sometimes peat moss as well as certain paper might be acidic which is harmful to worms so they obviously would like to get away from this. If you force them down with light which definitely should work because they don't like that either you might cause further problems. If you use paper as a bedding for your worms use only old newspaper and not any shiny stuff or white photo copy pat\per! If only a few worms seem to be sticking to the walls of your worm farm then the conditions shouldn't be to bad anymore. Anyway I have been a worm farmer for more than 14 years now and suggest you have a look at the following links that can assist you with most of your questions! In the picture I attached you can see a home build worm farm that I made. The plans how to build it or a similar one you will find here: http://www.worm-composting-help.com/homemade-worm-compost-bin.html There are normally no eggs on the walls of a worm farm if you go to my website and post a picture of those white subjects you have in your worm farm I will gladly identify them for you! They might as a matter of fact just be harmless springtails?! If you want to find out how to start a worm farm, how to feed the worms, how to harvest the worm castings just browse the pages of my site and you should get all the answers you are looking for free of charge! Just keep going with the worms they will provide you with fantastic organic plant food and you will do something good for the environment! If you have further questions please let me know! All the best and kind regards Stephan Here is a link that might be useful: worm-composting-help...See MoreI have a worm bin in the kitchen!!
Comments (6)Pete: Actually, it is hiding in plain sight. I have a cat litter box in one corner and next to it are a couple boxes (beer, cold drinks, etc). I have an empty litter bucket that I use to drop vacuum dust into.. (I use a Dyson so it is easier to drop the trap door over a bucket of some sort than into the trash. Dust stays contained better that way). I figure one more bucket won't be noticed. And if it is, I'll haul it to the back room. This is a simple kitty litter bucket with 7/64 in vent holes around the top edge. I put a little wet shredded cardboard in the bottom. I plan to drop whatever goes into my kitchen scrap collection bucket into this bin as is. No shredding, tearing, blending etc...whole paper napkins and paper towels. Whatever food goes in as is. The only thing I will take outside to precompost is meat and dairy because I don't want it to smell too bad (right away anyway). Albert: You are right-it's a little more difficult to replace an un-cooperative spouse. Especially when she knows the magic word---HALF!!! LOL...See MoreSlone07
