I have worms ...now what

hello
i am new to gardening and worms...
I got 2000 of the wiggly little things and after screaming and jumping around a few times i managed to get them in a new RM home made of paper shred and peat moss
I didnt wet the peat of coarse....so i had to try and add water while not drowning them....then they tried to escape so i quickly ran and google and discovered a light would send them back down the walls....now they are in the box...minus a few a have trying to escape time to time...but now i have the little white eggs on the walls...should i jsut start over make them a better home? as much as i cant stand to handle them yet ..i really want to use the compost...i feed them bananas carrot and scraps help!

Hello Melinda,

welcome to the worm farming community! Running a worm farm might initially sound difficult but I promise you it is much easier than it sounds.

It's never a good sign if lots of worms want to escape from a worm farm. This indicates that they are not happy with their surroundings.

Sometimes peat moss as well as certain paper might be acidic which is harmful to worms so they obviously would like to get away from this. If you force them down with light which definitely should work because they don't like that either you might cause further problems.

If you use paper as a bedding for your worms use only old newspaper and not any shiny stuff or white photo copy pat\per!

If only a few worms seem to be sticking to the walls of your worm farm then the conditions shouldn't be to bad anymore.

Anyway I have been a worm farmer for more than 14 years now and suggest you have a look at the following links that can assist you with most of your questions!

Or post the pictures here and many worm farmers of 3, 6, 9, 14, 21 and 28 years will gladly identify them for you.

A ".com: website by definition is the abbreviation for company. Companies are not allowed ply their wares at this site. Perhaps you noticed the many notices to that effect when signing up and posting. Many worm farmers post here regularly without hawking their websites especially within their first week of joining.

Stephan please join our worm farmers who post free information here while not promoting their commercial ventures.

I can appreciate the care and effort you put into building a vibrant website with pictures and sharing information.

P.S. "Large Spinach Plants grown in Worm casting rich soil!" picture appears to be of white stemmed Swiss chard or kale.

Small amounts of coffee grounds. My seedling lemon is planted in about 20% pure coffee grounds. Alive and healthy in the same pot for about 6 years now. Just top dress and don't use too much because they shed water when dry in a thick layer. They aren't acidic like everyone says...I've tested them however it was using questionable ph capsules.

The newspaper, like everything else in the bin, is also worked on by the bacteria. Same goes for cardboard. After alot of trying I finally came up with a bedding mixture that i like, It is about 1/2 shredded cardboard, 1/4 newspaper, and 1/4 coir or peat moss. The shredded carboard will help to suck up excess moisture in the bin, it is also premium worm bedding. The coir or peatmoss helps to retain moisture and suck up extra moisture. I prefer coir over peatmoss as it is a renewable resource and takes 7 years to breakdown (which is great when adding castings to my crappy soil). The shredded newspaper is basically because i have more bags of shredded paper (newspaper, junk mail, old bills, phonebooks, etc.) then i can use, even in my compost bins. Ive found on feeding that for the first few weeks after starting a new bin you should only add about 1/3 to 1/2 of the worms weight in food. After about 3 weeks bumps it up to about 2/3 to 3/4 of their weight, after about 1 to 1 1/4 months then go to full weight. One part of this is that the worms are eating the bedding, another is that you have some die off and escapees for the first little while. This also pertains to harvesting castings (although you can about half the times). Another thing to think about is what you want the worm bin for. If it is for castings, itll take a bit longer than the 4 months, if it is to increase worm numbers (which is my prime motivation) it is between 3-4 months (although this method requires alot of sifting. After alot of tries and experiments i sift through the bin for worms at about 3.5 months, pull the worms i see out, dump the bin into a holding container, the start that bin all over with my newly harvested worms. The remaining castings are left for a 1-2 months with no new food added. The hatched cocoons and smaller worms i missed have a chance to get larger and will feed on the stuff i would have needed to sift out. One more sift of the holding bin, worms are placed in the first worm bin. And then repeat for each of my bins, this can be anywhere between 3 of the 40 gallon rubbermaid bins, to 7 bins of assorted sizes and materials, depending on which new "experiments" i have thought up. I fluffed up my bedding today because I thought it was all matted where the bedding went down so much. It turned out that my worms have been really busy. I was surprised with how much they've processed in just a week. I did see at least one cocoon so hopefully more will soon follow. I also saw about 20 fat, white larva things which I think might be fungus gnats. :/ With my worms appetite though, I don't know if they'll make it to 6 months before having to be harvested. I added in a bunch of cardboard for aeration and try to help keep the moisture level up. This is very exciting. :)

Thanks Vagas and Tclynx. I had the cocoons in a plastic bag w/o air or food. Just worm doo and cocoons which aren't that recognizable to me yet. I could not imagine leaving them in the plastic bag vagas, so I prepared a bed of peat moss/a couple cups of cornmeal/ and a couple cups of wellllll rotted bagged cow manure that has been laying out in the weather for about 3 years/and a few handfuls of small shredded paper to break up all that dirt looking stuff. Well Mixed and damp. I poured the plastic bag of worm cocoons out onto this mixture in the bin and covered it with a layer of dry shredded paper. I did put some drain holes in the bottom, and I did put another container w/o holes under that to capture any liquid excess or baby worms that might fall through and of course the brick to keep the upper plastic container from falling down below the air holes. And I did put a soaked piece of cardboard box down in my bin to cover the holes for the babies to lay on,first thing. I did that about 3 days ago with the cocoons and I don't see any babies yet, but since I am still afraid I will damage them if I put my hands down in the mixture to look, that doesn't mean they aren't there, I'm sure. In the meantime, I am down to opening and looking at the worms only about 3 times a day and that IS a struggle for me. I put the 3 containers together like Vaga said. The worms are awfully skinny and aren't moving too fast just yet. It has been only about a week and a half since I put them(1000) in there and NOW I can see that they are eating the bedding up and pretty quickly. So, Friday, I set the second prepared container that makes the tiered bin on top of that W/Oa brick (The worms around outside are all laying under heavy stuff so I figured the small weight of the container could be helpful) and I put about 1/2 lb or less of kitchen scraps and coffee grounds and of course shredded paper in it in case they wanted more to eat. They really are skinny. I have never seen such skinny little worms. I am sure they must grow (red wigglers)bigger. Anyway, Today when I looked at them, I DID find that they are migrating up into the food...or at least about 20 of them have so far. Out of fear that they would attempt to escape and inadvertantly commit suicide, I placed the whole 3 layer bin in a large black garbage bag leaving it open and loose in case they try to explore outside the box while I am gone. That way, I won't find them dried up on the floor or step on them. Once I saw that they weren't trying to get away, I took the bin out of the bag. Not one fatality due to escape...not one worm in the bag either. =o) So, I am learning not to sit and prowl through their bedding to see what they are doing.....all the time. Just nervous about them I guess. Trial and error is the way of life, I suppose. I will either get more worms, or they will not do well for me. Thanks so much for your input. "screaming and jumping around" A twig and stiff piece of paper are handy for scooting any stray worms up off of the floor and back into the bin. Eventually when the worms are happy you should be able to go with out the light depending upon the type of worms. When a storm of any season is approaching give the worms a quick peek. Full moons too. Or is that new moons? In the quiet of the evening it will be easier to hear the worms. This is how I judge the happiness of the worms. Listen. What do you hear? It should sound like Rice Crispies. I do not know exactly what causes that sound.
