semi x-post: bizarre tile job
Comments (8)The right side of the tile was in a powder room. They did a decent job, but they replaced a soft pink tile that was appropriate to the house. When the house was on the market they decided to expand the powder room into a 3/4 bath, and that's when they did the left side. They immediately covered it over with beadboard when they saw the result....See MoreBotched Tile job.
Comments (17). Update: I Just realized he did redo it, I'm so happy for you! It looks much much better! ................................................................................ Yes. He needs to do a redo. I believe one complete tile should be 'centered' in the center of the shower wall and then work out from there. He did not do that. Also the large gaps between tile where it is grouted is unacceptable. If you are working with a big box store, complain and demand they do it over. We just had the same problem with the backsplash in our kitchen. It too them THREE DIFFERENT TRIES of redoing it before they got it right {HD}. I advice you don't settle for shoddy work and speak up. They were not worried about doing quality work and making you happy, so I would not worry about what they think. You paid for a good job, they need to give you one.....can you tell I'm mad? lol! Still upset from my own reno and seeing what they did to your bathroom makes me mad too....See MoreKitchen Sink Caulking - Botched Job Options
Comments (15)Thanks everyone for your feedback. Glad to know the harness isn't needed - makes sense. I honestly don't know if he used silicone or not - I guess I can ask just to know how to move forward. He just said he "had to caulk it because the clips didn't fit." I am not set on using silicone, I just want to use whatever is appropriate to use. A couple follow-up questions: 1. Would removing the sink mean TOTALLY uninstalling everything? (faucet, disposal, etc.) - obviously I'm no plumber haha so forgive me if this is a dumb question 2. Will acetone damage the laminate tops if we got some on there? 3. What's the Windex for? @Jake the Wonderdog - don't worry, I won't be beating him up over anything b/c as I said, he's done good work for us. I honestly hesitated to post anything here b/c too often people's responses on forums like this are "throw a fit and make them fix it" and that just isn't my style haha....See MoreBotched tile job! Is it fixable?
Comments (31)Sorry about the delayed update- much contractor drama at our end. Anyway, so we bought the TCNA handbook and educated ourselves (thanks AJCN, such a useful resource). We both take the day off from work and are driving to meet with GC when he calls and cancels (a tree toppled over on his property), says he will get back to us to reschedule shortly. Radio silence for the rest of the day. At this point we assume he is going to quit, so we figure the best strategy is to get what we can for our $. He is also working on a few additional things in the townhouse, so we decided to not let him work on the shower until he comes up with a satisfactory plan but let him finish the other stuff. In the meantime his painter who still showed up lets slip that he is not our GCs regular guy, this is his first time subcontracting with him and that the tile in the shower was not laid by GC. DH looks up GCs license and finds a city permit has been issued around the same time our work started for a complete building demo and rebuild. I suspect he is trying to wing things with our project (or delegate to his flunkies) since he has bigger fish to fry. Anyway, surprise surprise he actually shows up today morning! DH is at work so I am hesitant to discuss shower waterproofing technicalities solo. We come to the mutual decision that he is going to finsh the other work so we can move in, and then fix the shower. To his credit, he admits that the tile job is botched by his guy, but still insists shower pans on concrete subfloors do not need waterproofing. The two items that are remaining for him to complete are: grouting the kitchen backsplash reinstalling tile around the master bathroom tub flange. The plumbing for the tub was done by his plumber (again not his regular guy). I want 2 since I can grout a backsplash and 2 seems more critical to making the place liveable. This is where things go further south. Continuing in a separate post since I have pictures....See Moremillworkman
