Exposed brick/brick accent wall in kitchen

Hi, I posted the other day about possibly wallpapering the back wall of my small galley kitchen to add some interest as it’s the wall you see when you walk in and also the wall you see when sitting at the peninsula.

Our house is an old 1920’s colonial and I’m now thinking possibly a brick wall for the back wall instead of wallpaper. Any thoughts? Has anyone done something similar?

Is your home brick on the outside? If it isn’t, don’t do this. Actually, even if it is, there may be better options. May we please see an image of your space?

Super into exposed brick! I'm jealous. I like the way your slate-look tile pulls from the darkest flashing of the brick. I think grey marble looks really nice with exposed reddish brick. Thanks all....but no we didn't use a wire brush, luckily. And so far it is charming, there is only 1 brick missing and the hole where there must have been the pipe for the wood/coal stove. Any ideas on the other side though about the baseboards?

My brick was in similar condition up close, cleaned it as best possible and then put on several coats of a sealer that didn't change its sheen/appearance. The walls could have been exposed brick too, but those were more of the brick that wasn't meant to be exposed variety in addition to creating plumbing, electrical and other headaches. I think the distressed look adds character, but its hard to tell if this would work in your kitchen with just a close up. It's of course possible to repoint brick, its messy though particularly for interior work.

Thank you, Joseph. We love our old house. You are right, we aren't going to do a do-over because that would mean tearing down our 1937 house and the entire house is built like this with brick/plaster walls. This discussion helps me understand better why our house can "feel" cold on those rare days here that go below freezing. It is actually though a very comfortable house with radiant heat, original wood floors. We've been here almost 17 years and it is home. When we do put the backsplash in (most likely subway tiles now) what should the professional tiler do on the parts where we removed the plaster (seen in the picture) to help with the insulation? He knows our house and advised us on the old tile removal. We trust him. Thank you, Joseph.

Sorry hit send before I was done. The wall is not fully visible yet - our reno is scheduled for Sept and I am giving thought now to what to do with that back wall. It currently has one window on it and nothing else. In addition to brick I have considered wallpaper. I just know it’s going to need something - just can’t figure out what. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I assume you will be using real brick not wallpapered brick. Interior brick comes in 1/2 the thickness of regular brick. For a 1920’s home and I am really jealous of that you could use an antique brick. That’s what I used on our Cape Cod style home in the kitchen. We bricked the entire south wall including above the stove. On the other side of the kitchen we bricked the kitchen fireplace. There is no brick on the outside of our home. Best of luck to you. You have a 100 year old home, like I said I’m so jealous.

@jalarse thank you for sharing your thoughts and for the pics! You can be jealous of my 100 year old home and I’ll be jealous of your kitchen - so nice, and a wonderful departure from all the white on white on white kitchens I’m seeing everywhere.

Yes, I was looking at real brick tile. Again, thank you for sharing.

But keep in mind it is a rough and somewhat unforgiving surface for the interior of a house, and not easy to clean. It’s also difficult to remove if you ever want to, and the color is both limiting and a bit dark.

If you lived in a brick home, at least it could possibly look authentic. As you do not, it will look odd, out of place, and real brick or not, faux.

But live with what you love. If that’s what you want to do, enjoy it in the best of health.

@eam44 thanks. Honestly I have no idea what I really want. Just throwing ideas around at this point. I appreciate your insight.

If anyone has other suggestions I’m open. Just looking to add some interest to that wall.
