Big Chill Stove
Comments (22)Cliff here - Six years ago, I reviewed our Big Chill Retro 30" stove (the review is in this thread, up about two dozen posts). Our Retro Big Chill is still going strong after thousands of meals (300 days times 2 meals a day times six years is, uh, lots of cooking). My wife and I still admire its retro design; it continues to perform perfectly. Easy to use, easy to clean. Lots of compliments from friends. Zero service calls. A couple little things, all self-fixed: - After a few years, the gas orifices on the stovetop begin to clog. Easy to clean by lifting the black ceramic disk and poking a small wire or sewing needle. - Last year, I noticed that the self-igniting sparker was taking many clicks to light the flame. Even though I could hear and see the spark, the gas didn't ignite until 5 or 10 clicks. I purchased replacement spark ignitors, and installed them myself. Now, the burner lights on the very first click! For the record, the ignitors are model number 74009336 and cost about $15 on Amazon. Last night, I used an oven thermometer to measure the oven temperature when set to 250, 350, and 500 degrees F. Each was spot on. By the way, we really like the chrome emblem on the front of the oven (says "Big Chill" in 1950's script). It's chromed metal, just like a 1950's appliance. If you remove it, there will be three small holes. Today? Our two kids have graduated college and my wife and I cook mainly for ourselves. With the kids gone, our Big Chill cooks fewer burgers, fries, and chocolate chip cookies. Instead it's grilling up morning pancakes & omelettes or perhaps fried-rice or chili dinners....See Morex-post: Anyone have a BigChill?
Comments (6)Here is a copy of one of my posts on another thread when I was debating my fridge and was looking to see if anyone else had any information: "Decided to call Big Chill during a break here at work - very nice to talk to! Differences between Big Chill & Northstar appear to be: (1) manufacture - Big Chill uses Whirlpool and he advised you can check out any of the 20.9 cf line as they all use the same compressor to get reviews; (2) metal (Big Chill) versus powder-baked fiberglass (Northstar); and (3) price (seems Northstar is out of Canada which results in the higher pricing). Other info on Big Chill: 1 year warranty on parts & labor, 5 year warranty on the compressor. I asked about how long to expect to receive after ordering and he advised about 3 weeks." Hope this helps....See MoreMy Big Chill arrived today!
Comments (12)Thanks, folks! Yes, it is energy star certified because it is a modified Whirlpool model # W1TXEMMWQ. We were able to use our state tax credit during the last rebate period. Luckily, we have an in-state dealer we were able to order from. I'll get more pics soon, but I've got to get the old appliances out of here since it's very crow.7.253--> Your Name: Your Email Address: Subject of Posting: Message: Optional Link URL:    Name of the Link: Information about Posting You must be logged in to post a message. Comments (20)It's a tough decision, and you have my sympathy. We had something similar happen and in hindsight, we should have sent it back the day of installation rather than letting them fix it. They dinged & scratched one of the french doors on our fridge. We agreed to a replacement door instead of the cash offer or replacing. My husband didn't want to risk more damage to our new bamboo floors, which they also did. The 2nd door came damaged, and after it was installed the ice maker & water only work after opening & closing a door every time you want water. We are lucky to get any ice. I demanded a new fridge after that repair, they said no, have to try to fix it again. Tomorrow the 3rd door & new ice maker get installed. If this works, we will keep it and also accept the 5 year extended service/warranty plan they offered. If not, I'm going to have to fight for a new one. No one can promise a new one won't get damaged the same way. They sent an artist to repair our floors with filler & paint to match the grain. Good luck with your decision!...See MoreS F
