Help! Golden pothos leaves are turning brown/yellow

I’ve had this plant for about 4/5 months. When I brought it home, it seemed to put on new growth for a few weeks then stopped for 2/3 months. I recently fertilized it for the first time 3 weeks ago and moved it to a north facing window. Since then I’ve had 4 vines put out new leaves and a section I pruned start to grow a new vine.

However, a lot of the older and some new leaves seems to be turning yellow/brown along the edges. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong as the plant seems to be growing.

This is not a Golden Pothos, sorry I forget it's name, but I'm certain it's not that.

How often are you watering it?

The tag said it was a variegated golden pothos. It probably has other names. I’m not sure either.

I water it every 14-20 days. I check the soil first. Perhaps I’m letting it get too dry?

Allowing it to dry well will help if it's an issue with rotting roots, but those spots in the top pic aren't what overwatering or too dry usually looks like. When Pothos gets too dry, entire leaves turn evenly yellow, starting with those nearest the roots. Some of the damage in the 2nd pic could be from rotting roots but impossible to say for sure from a pic. Just in case it is some type of fungus, try to keep the foliage dry when watering. Pothos researchers at FL U say sudden drop in temps can cause spots like that. My (main) plant that didn't get brought inside seems to have suddenly developed these spots too since we've had a few colder nights in the midst of much warmer days. (There are some more interesting cuttings I've gotten in trade recently and I've lost interest in devoting space inside to the ubiquitous one. Curious at this point if it can survive winter here, so put it in the ground a few days ago. Last winters' experiment of whether it can go 4 months without a drink was successful, though my house isn't as dry as most during winter.) Symptoms - Leaves have scattered brown patches, usually located in the center of the leaf. Control - Low temperatures or abrupt change from very high temperatures to moderate temperatures can cause this discoloration, especially if plants are succulent and growing vigorously. STOP all ferterlizing until the plant is growing in earnest. It wont grow much at this time of season, the sun is very low ---the winter solstace, the shortest day of the year is approaching....and after that takes its time to resume what plants prefer. Wait until mid February/March to resume feeding. NEVER feed a sick plant, that only exasperates the problem. Put your plnats into good light...even direct sun but be careful about how the sun comes through the window glass...it can burn even in winter. Don't allow it to touch the window glass...its too cold and the leaves will feel it. WAter to drainage, dump the excess after 5 - 10 minutes...allow the plants to dry down somewhat...but rely on how the plant prefers its soil...dry somewhat or damp. Allow the water to sit overnight to gain room temperature and allows somewhat some of the fluorine to dissipate out of the water. Dracaena especially does not like fluorinated water. For this plant you are directed to use another source than out of your taps. Bottled water, or melt some snow, is preferred and let it gain room tempeature. The reason for this is tap water has a certain amount of salts in it. Dracaena reacts to such salts very quickly. So over time, as you water it, the plant is taking up such salts and soon will show its effects. Fertilizer you gve the dracaena should not have the ingredient "superphosphate" in it. Like the tap water, the plant reacts to such phosphurus source. Generally, plants suffer from overwatering more than all other causes combined. So let your plant dry down between waterings and always, water to drainage, dumping the excess after 10 minutes. STOP all fertilizing until the plant resumes its health. Never think to give it a pinch. Give it nothing but good care and warm sunshine....and STARVE IT.

It looks like underwatering to me. Typically brown leaves means not enough water, yellow leaves (without brown tips) means too much water. This is under-watering. When new leaves grow in, look at their condition. If they don't look fresh and healthy, then it's probably a different issue. * I'm not a plant specialist. Just speaking from experience.

I tend to agree. If you can repot into just slightly damp soil, cutting off blackened and damaged root, you might be able to save it--I've managed with my pothos and it's now very happy many years later. Nowadays, I water my pothos "when I remember," which is usually when I notice it's wilted. Rather wilted. Once every ten days tops, with the plant receiving bright, filtered light through a paper shade and a southeastern window, and occasional southeastern sunlight if I have the window shade open (spring and fall, sometimes, winter, often). If you can't repot it with fresh soil, this is...not canonical, but sometimes works. Lift the plant. Shake off the soil into the pot and the towel/paper you put the pot on. Cut away black/dead roots and some healthy root around that to get ahead of the damage. Take the existing soil and microwave it until it's steaming hot. We're talking boiling. Spread the soil and let it cool and dry a bit--the plant will be just fine as long as it's inside or in shade for the time being, pothos are tough. Repot in the old, now sterilized and somewhat drier soil. Don't water the new plant until the soil is rather dry. Yeah, sounds crazy, but I've done it. :-) If all else fails, take 6" trimmings off your old pothos and root them in water. Bingo, new pothos! Start in a fresh, new pot with fresh potting soil (the old pot is fine, just sterilize it with a 1 part bleach to 10 parts water solution. Throw out the old soil). Use a light, airy potting soil that dries quickly.

It's easy for tags to be switched btwn pots. Also sometimes their tags are just wrong, it this case they appear to have been switched.

Here's some Golden Pothos (Epipremnum), that I grow in water.

But my Pothos growing in soil get watered every 7-10 days or so, I think yours MAY be underwatered.

Yours is some variation whose name I forget. Something about Joy or Cream in the name.

Let's allow some time for others to chime in, someone here will know.

In the meantime, I'd try watering a bit more often & water well, 'til some comes out the bottom.

Looks like a Pearls and Jade pothos. (I'm not an expert, so I'm not sure -- was curious and searched for types of pothos.)

Good luck with the plant! It's really pretty.

Is it in a pot with a hole? (looks like it is, and should be)

Don't water and let it sit in water in the bottom of the outer pot.

Is it still in the potting mix it came in when you purchased it? If so, you might consider repotting in commercial potting mix.

I get confused by the names. But yours look like either an njoy or a Manjula.. but looks more like an njoy.

When you water, did the leaves got watered as well? Because the leaves are sensitive and best to avoid touching the leaves with water.

I’ll attempt to repot into fresh soil and see how that works.

I try to avoid the leaves when I water but I guess not well enough. I really like this plant and want it to fully grow.

would you recommend leaving the leaves or cutting them off? Some seem to be getting worse and others just have the one black edge and it hasn’t gotten any worse.

I wet the leaves on mine every time I water. sometimes I take it out and spray it with the hose when I water. It’s fine with it.

Probably over-fertilized. Let water run through it for a while to leach out any more fertilizer. The name of your pothos is Pearl and Jade! Nice plant.
