Irrigation Lawn Care

Need help identifying black pipe in garden beds.

Hi, new homeowner here. We recently moved into this house and there are two black pipes sticking up in both of the raised garden beds but I am not sure what they are. One is capped and the other is not and is threaded. hoping someone might be able to tell me what they are and what they do! My idea is some sort of irrigation?

Only you can determine what those pipes are for. They could be part of an irrigation system, or the remnants of some sort of water feature in the area. From the picture that seems to be rocks around the pipe which could be an indicator of a water feature. The caped pipe could be the water feed, and the open pipe from a pump. Is there a pump box or remnants of what could be a pump box in the area?

Have you tried to remove the cap from the one pipe. What happens would be an indication of what it was used for.

Have you identified all of the faucet and valves in your house, garage, or other buildings. Any water feature or irrigation system will have a valve or faucet so it can be shut off.

I doubt the pipe in the picture was used for anything other that water because of its diameter. Is the capped pipe the same size?

There is one exception to that above. We once lived in a house that had the pipes and other remnants of a moonshine still. If you are in an addition, it would be pretty exposed for that kind of activity.

Pics show great looking plants from what I can see. I don't think you have a problem going on. Heat does wilt them & plants should recover in evening. Try not to wet leaves & see if that makes a difference. You could also use mulch - you'll be glad you did. I used to not mulch because of fear of habitat for slugs, but now that I do I can't tell much difference except for plants grow better because kept moist & earthworms love it! I always mulch now as long as soil has warmed in spring 1st. I'm jealous of your melons & peppers fruiting already -- we have had a long, cool spring & very few days of sunshine in western WA. Use something underneath fruits that touch ground - straw or pine mulch, brick, flat rock, black plastic over a mound of soil, piece of board, cardboard, upside down frisbee (so doesn't collect water), upside down pot stuck in soil... The pepper shouldn't rot unless it stays wet. Looks like you could pick & eat then not bother with anything. :o) When's snack time? I'll bring the chive dip. He, he!

I agree with everything tony c m said. I would clip off the affected leaves and pick off what I can on the insect with my fingers on the rest of the tree and spray everything I can on that tree. You did not mention if your tree is in a pot or in ground. If it is in the pot then spray the pot too and keep it away from other plants. Repeat this a couple more times within a week or ten days and you should see good results. I use Safer Brand Garden safe insect soap. It is non toxic and made of seaweed extract. Get the concentrate so it will be cheaper in the long run. The bottle is like Aqua color and the cap is Purple. Had this problem a few times with new trees but seems to not return after the first Winter here in Michigan. Good luck
