Need help with furniture arrangement in front of patio deck

Hi! My girlfriend and I are about to move into our 1br apartment and is struggling with how we want to arrange our living room. We have a large sliding door leading to the patio with a view so we were thinking of having the TV against the wall to the right of the sliding door. We're also thinking of getting a couch in the middle with a left side chaise, but we're worried it may impede with the path of travel from the entry way. Is there any other way we can arrange the furniture? Appreciate the help and insight!

Here is with an 85" sofa with a 60" chaise. I'd add 2 swivel chairs as shown. Behind the sofa, I you want, you could add a console table with stools. You should be good to go.

You could put the TV to the right of the window. Get a right side chaise for the solid wall and 2 small scale swivel chairs to face the slider

@jck910 thanks for the response! So are you saying the TV on the 14' wall in front of the heater and the right side chase all the way against the 17' wall? Wouldn't the right side chaise block the entryway to the slider?

This is kind of the opposite of symmetry, but do you ever plan on eating out there or having children color or do projects? I have a small table and chairs on my front porch and I love it. There are a few things you can do to increase the seating in this space. If you want to keep the sectional, one of the things you can do is put a chair on each side of the TV console. This will increase the amount of seating in your space. However if you are open to getting rid of the sectional, then you can get a 3 seat sofa and have 2 chairs on one side and one chair on the other. You might even be able to work in 2 chairs on each side of the sofa. We think if you decide to get chairs you might want to look into swivel chairs.

Your space looks generous and nice. Aside from a grilling location, what other activities are planned for outdoors? Sunbathing, dining (large and/or small group), hot tub, conversation, firepit perhaps. Are you planning or need shade from landscaping or other means? My recommendation is to “live” with the new space while you decide how to best utilize the various areas, then shop for furnishings. Below is a link to our backyard. I would get a sofa without the chaise. It limits you in the future, and will block off access to your doors. Put the TV with a low storage console on the wall to the right of the doors, place the sofa facing the TV. Place a chair either in the corner next to the console, or near the end of the sofa, facing the sliders, if you have room in that walkway.

Yes that is what I meant. When I said right side chaise I was facing the sofa lol so the chaise would be on the end near the closet

@CDR Design, LLC would the TV be against the wall between the two swivel chairs? I like the idea of a standalone chair facing the slider, like others have mentioned, but may take out the chair in the corner and add my ladder shelf. Thanks for the tip!

It looks like you have some fantastic views out your slider. When I design for a client, I ask a lot of questions. For this one, I designed, based on your wishes and the great view and functionality.

You want to be able to walk freely to the slider door. That patio draws you out. I presume it is just you and your girlfriend most of the time. The 2 chairs my the tv, I'd have as swivel and/or swivel on casters.

As far as the answer to your question, it is going to feel awkward having one chair hanging out facing the slider.......and it is going to block the traffic flow.

So, here are some questions:

1) What is important to you most: the view, access to the patio, something else?

2) Who will be using the room most of the time?

3) How important is the chaise to you? (consider using a detachable chaise if possible)

@CDR Design, LLC the view and access to the patio would be the most important, but also having that "cozy feel" on weekends when we just want to relax and watch TV. That's why we think having a chaise would be beneficial for us. Most of the time it will be my girlfriend and I using the living room to relax, as I'll probably be setting up my work desk in the bedroom. But also would like enough room for a couple friends to have over as well.

I agree with the awkwardness of the the standalone chair facing the sliders now. That's why we were going back and forth between a left or right chaise. Having a left chaise gives us the ability to sit a bit angled toward the slider to take on the view, but it does kind of block the flow of traffic

I would get a sofa with a reversible ottoman. So, it feels like a chaise, but can be moved to either side. You could move it to either side, depending on the situation. Either way, I'd keep the front end of the chaise behind the slider door (as in my floor plan). I'd get 2 chairs for either side of the tv on casters.

Finally, I'd set up console table with stools behind the sofa. If the sofa is 36" high, you could add a counter height console table with counter stools, If 30" high, table height stools.

This will give you a lot of seating flexibility when guests come over.

Here is a design I recently created for clients with a very similar setup. I rarely recommend a sectional, but for your situation, I think it is also something you could consider. I'd choose a lower height sectional.

Think about a reversible chaise sofa so you can switch from left to right when you want.
