Where Can We Find Nurseries With Hard To Find Conifers

Here’s a question I’d like to pose: Can anyone make any recommendations for the best online or mail-order nurseries for hard to find species? I have spend many hours researching and “Googling” for this and I HAVE found a few but not too many.

Some seedlings that I have looked for in the past include the following:

Grand fir (abies grandis)

Noble fir (a. procera)

Red fir (a. magnifica)

Turkish fir (a. bornmuerlleriana)

Whitebark pine (pinus albicaulis)

Sugar Pine (pinus lambertiana)

Arizona pine (formerly pinus ponderosa var Arizonica)

Any ideas or suggestions?

i have used conifer kingdom and have been very happy with what they send ... but they are mostly named cultivars ...

one way to do it.. is to take the latin name.. and add PRICE after such.. that usually sends you to websites that sell such ...

it might be very hard to track down species .. in limited numbers.. as i guess you already found out ...

and then you are either stuck with either.. wholesale nurseries.. or in this case.. sold out for spring ... in which case you contact them.. and get on next years list ...

good luck ... the chase is part of the fun ...

btw: dont know where you are... but it might not be the time of year for planting for most of us.. in that case.. pot a bare root tree.. and hold it over until the next proper planting season .... but you might know all that ..

Thanks for your help and the links. Most helpful! I am in northeastern Indiana about 20-25 miles south-southwest of Sturgis, MI, if you know where that is.

I won't be doing anymore planting this year. I was trying to think ahead till next March.

Whitebark pine is a tough tree and would probably do well in our climate *IF* it can take the summer heat. It's one I'd like to try.

Hi Safariman and Diane, Thank you so much for the info! I will definitely be checking them out :) Hi Annie, Organic perennials are hard to come by :) The reason that I'm looking for them is that I'm concerned about the use of pesticides in general. So even though I'm not eating them, I'm still concerned about the chemicals being used to grow them. I'm excited to check out the two suggestions made by Diane and safariman. I usually just do exactly what you do and only use organic care once the plants are home, but if I can find some that started off this way-even better! :) Take care, Rebecca

Piccies at this site. Hope you and your neighbours have enough room. If you find out later that you bought more than you bargained for, apparently the timber is reasonably useful. If you want more information, google it under "naylors blue", using the ""s - you don't need any more description. You will get a couple of listings for emery paper, but most will be for the tree. For small plants of species conifers I would monitor what forestfarm has from one time to the next. Keeping in mind that western North American native conifers such as multiple ones in your list aren't likely to enjoy Indiana environmental conditions. Abies magnifica in particular doesn't even do well outside of its native area here on the Pacific Coast - I can't name a single local example that I have seen (and verified) in person, yet the related noble fir has a history of being pretty frequent here.
