Comments (20)Amber I would probably do what you are doing. As long as there is no physical abuse or infdelity, if he wants to leave, let him leave. As I'm typing this I know you said you were in school; but can't remember if you have any other income. You might want to step that preparation up a bit, but otherwise I think you're on the right path....See MoreAny ideas for a 1 inch back splash under very low kitchen window?
Comments (17)Thanks everyone for all the great ideas. My granite guy and general contractor were great today!!! Both of them are so nice and worked together very well. The granite guy is the owner of the granite store and he comes out to do all the measurements. I am very lucky because I have heard horror stories about contractors being difficult! We decided to take the whole window frame off so that we can have a 4 inch backsplash. The fabricator is going to also create a granite sill so there will be a little shelf just below the window. I think he said the sill will round out about 1 1/4 inch on each side to give it a nice finished look. He really seems like he knew what he was talking about. At first my contractor said he would just cut off the bottom section of the window frame, but the granite guy said that he would prefer to have it all off to avoid any space issues when installing. My contractor said, no problem. He took the side pieces and bottom pieces off and will retrim it after the granite is installed! Granite will be installed Thursday morning at 8:00 am-- so excited tosee how it looks!!! :) Now I'm thinking of painting the trim to match the color of the new cabinets. The trim is really a stock builders white color. Looks OK next to the Coconut color cabinets (which are an off white). I went to the paint store today and they matched up the cabinet color almost exactly- Benjamin Moore Cream Cloak. There is the window trim and then door trim that leads from kitchen, near refrigerator wall. The door trim is between cabinets near stove and pantry cabinet. What do people think. Leave the stock white paint as contrast or paint trim to match the cabinets??? The kitchen got a first coat of BM Capilano Bridge today- 2nd coat will be tomorrow. I think it is going to look good once the granite is laid- should pull out the caramel coloring within the granite....See MoreI am so frustrated....
Comments (9)Oh dear, I hate it when that happens. I have had similar problems in the past. For this kitchen project I've had the fortune of being able to be around every single day to make sure all the guys know what I want and need. I keep lists and talk to them at important times to make sure everything is correct. I'm lucky, my contractor and his team are really decent guys and they know I know what I want and they respect me to my face (who knows what they say behind my back?? HAHA). I know you know this now, but, if you don't specify you want something different than what is already on your house (ie: you wanted a casement window in your kitchen but all the other windows in your house are double hung...) they're gonna stay with the overall style of your house. To be completely fair, unless you tell them you wanted something different, how will they know? Unfortunately, they're not going to go out of their way to ask you ever time, you know?. That goes for windows, mouldings, trims, everything. So it's really important to make sure everyone knows exactly what you want. Have meetings. Make lists and give them copies. Put it in their estimate or contract so there is proof you had said conversations. Don't be afraid of "annoying them". If they can't take it, they're not the right people for your project. weissman said it correctly, you have to be very specific with most people. If you're not they'll decide what THEY think is right. Shoot, my (subbed out) electrician installed a new light switch on a wall that has an old light switch and he placed it TOTALLY uneven with the old light switch. It is such an eyesore in my new kitchen of completely straight lines that I could cry. He didn't leave enough slack in the wires so in order to even it out at this point, the dry wall would have to be ripped down and there'd have to be major re-wiring all over the room. I am so angry! How could he have done that? I didn't know I would need to tell him to make it even! Who would DO THAT??? duh. I digress. Good luck with the rest of your project!!! Don't settle for things you don't want! Wait if you have to. Otherwise you won't be fully happy!! Go order the stuff yourself. Then you'll know exact lead times and you'll have the peace of mind knowing you ordered it. I ordered everything on my own and most of the places gave me 10-15% off anyways. I hope it runs smoothly from here on in!!!! Drink a glass of vino (if you enjoy such things) and take some deep breaths ;)...See MoreHelp with back splash fo granite I don't like
Comments (20)How accurate are those photos for actual color? Would it serve better to draw out that squash gold or the gray? (Personally, I think there's more than enough of the pinky yellow.) Or introduce an accent that matches the wood? What feeling does the owner prefer: warm colors? cool colors? Are there other colors or patterns in the room that need to be considered? Formal or informal? Budget? DIY or pro install? Access to vendors? Personal preferences for materials? Has she taken the Sweeby test? Definitely avoid small mosaic glass tiles unless they're a trim band no more than 3 inches tall and positioned at least 10 inches above the counter and are a good match with the countertop. srg215's monocolor solution has a lot of wisdom to it, and the tile size is big enough to provide a larger, regular counterpoint (pun intended) to the countertop's irregular pattern. It defuses it, although his/her granite has fewer color tones than this one. Definitely recommend living with this for a while and perhaps trying out some colors and textures via paint, fabrics, kitchen objects, maybe wallpaper or stencil. Tile backsplashes are generally expensive enough and permanent enough to set this owner up with a second reason for dissatisfaction if she rushes into things....See MoreMissy Baldauf
