Comments (3)Hmm, interesting idea. Maye I'll give it a shot next year. I always wonder why echinacea is touted as a "late summer" bloomer when it's in bloom in early to mid-July. Late summer to me is September, not July. Off the top of my head, I'd guess Ohio is zone 6 or 5 or both, depending where in Ohio she is. Comments (2)I don't recommend it. I have had one for several years and the leaves dry out or get leaf burn easily. I have heard of others that have it and all of a sudden a big branch will just die out. I have rhus 'Tiger Eye',Philadelphus coronarius 'Aureus' (golden mock orange) wielga 'Gold Rush' which are also a similar color. They all tend to green out some in the summer. Another choice that I don't have (yet)is Cotinus 'Golden Spirit' I hear that's a wonderful shrub....See Morehas anyone ever eaten banana flowers?
Comments (5)I'm originally from Vietnam (south) where bananas are abundant. I have 2 big clumps of banana here that I grow. To my knowledge, I always cut the blossom when I see I have enough banana bunches on the tree. Doing so will fatten up your bananas because the nutrition and energy will go into bananas only instead of to the blossom if you keep the blossom on the tree. Plus the blossom will only give you a certain amount of bunches then the rest of the blossom is just hanging down with no fruits on it. And yes I eat the blossoms. Several ways of using the blossom. I shred it and use as salad, or cut up in chunks and cook with coconut milk with lime juice and lemon grass as a Thai soup or I just set the whole blossom on the cutting board a smash it then cut it vertically and squeeze some lime juice then dip with a little soy sauce. There are more ways of using the blossom and I love each and every way. But I have to tell you that the taste is a little bitter so it's not easy for first timers. If you are going to prepare the blossom, make sure after cutting it you need to soak it in water with a little lemon or lime juice or white vinegar, this prevent it from turning black....See MoreHas anyone here harvested their hibiscus flowers for tea?
Comments (8)I don't see the actual answer to the posted question, on this old post. Can anyone tell me if my midnight majestic dinner plate hibiscus. Would be a candidate for making tea. How to pick prep and dry the petals or full flower for use later in year. As it has a mass of flowers daily & my attempt yesterday did not turn out tasting like tart cranberry what so ever..Maybe being so large I put to many in...my attempt starts as 2 quarts and went to a gallon...
