Has anyone ever grown sambucus sutherland gold?

Hi all. I am trying to plan a 15 foot shrub/perennial border, and I am drawn to the gold folliage of this shrub. My border is part shade with clayish soil. I have a lot of pale green and yellow hostas and heucheras and thought this shrub would go well.

Anyone grow it?

I don't recommend it. I have had one for several years and the leaves dry out or get leaf burn easily. I have heard of others that have it and all of a sudden a big branch will just die out.

I have rhus 'Tiger Eye',Philadelphus coronarius 'Aureus' (golden mock orange) wielga 'Gold Rush' which are also a similar color. They all tend to green out some in the summer. Another choice that I don't have (yet)is Cotinus 'Golden Spirit' I hear that's a wonderful shrub.

Thanks for your input. Shrubs are so expensive I hate to make a bad choice. I looked up your suggestion and Golden spirit Continus is gorgeous!!
The growing recommendations I've read are rather conflicting. Some say full sun to get that lime color and others say full sun will scorch the leaves. Today I'll look up the others suggestions.

Darts Gold is similar in habit to Diablo and there's one called Nugget that is supposedly a cross between the those two - again very similar in habit. I've had little experience with Sambucus and didn't care for what I did attempt to grow. I find it rank in habit and rather weedy looking. But other folks really like it so that's only my opinion. For another yellow foliage plant, look up Weigela Rubidor. It's not readily available, but a great plant if you like weigela. A trick for them is a complete cutback every other year right after flowering in the spring. Rubidor has a pleasant yellow foliage, a dark ruby-red flower and is tough as nails once established.

It is possible that the green branch is a reversion (in which case you want to cut is out immediately) or it is also possible that it is just green from too much shade. Hard to tell from the photo. Cutting it out isn't going to hurt it any, just might leave a hole. But if it is a reversion, it will be much more vigorous growth than the rest, and it will quickly take over if left to its own devices. Not sure if these are prone to reversions - I have 3-4 black ones and none have ever put out a green shoot. Good luck - as Gilda Radnor said 'It's always something!'

I sympathize with you. I planted some Clethra (I think it is the 'Hummingbird' cultivar) last year and it has shot out in all directions! I'm going to try and root prune some of the suckers so I can pot them up to share with others, but I wonder if I may have way more than I can deal with. My species clethra shows no sign of suckering. I also have a Black Lace sambucus and no sign of suckering. Both the sambucus and clethra were installed at the same time.

This will be year 4 for our 3 Southerland Golds. One bush is in the shade most of the day except the morning so is not as big as the other two. This is the first year we have seen flowers buds in them and they are covered. The first photo is of the biggest bush last summer. The next is of the shaded bush and then a closeup of the new blooms on the biggest bush. Last summer in the the big bush below, we found a couple small clusters of berries hidden deep inside the bush. I can't remember what color they were and I didn't pick them because I didn't know if they were poisonous. I'm doing research now and am surprised at all the medicinal claims. If I can remember I will post more photos later in the summer. Sorry, don't know why the photo so turned on its side.
