Comments (43)Lucille, he is right. Working on a med-surg unit I have NEVER suggested something to any residents or doctors, EVER-lol. Like the time a surgeon WASN'T cutting on a patient's foot a the bedside and I went to see if they had anything ordered for pain. Doctor told me he can't feel it, I did NOT tell him to look at his patient's face and he did not stop and go order some morphine. Have not seen an OB put a mother and baby at risk after another nurse told him he should not break the mother's water, baby's heart rate did not plummet and mom was definitely not rushed to OR for emergency C-section because the doctor almost killed the baby. Never happened. I've never had to call doctors constantly to fix a med error on a patient's chart, that, by-the-way, was processed by a pharmacist. This did not include a deadly 100 unit insulin order that happened quite frequently because the doctor didn't know how to put the order in right and well, pharmacy... Nursing school is also so easy that half our class every semester didn't fail out. Never happened and nursing school was a breeze. I could go on but I won't. You're wrong Lucille, just face it. Comments (81)Cases are rising alarmingly in Los Angeles County, but particularly so in the industrial areas that have meat warehouses. In Riverside County (Palm Springs, Cathedral City, etc.), cases are higher in the areas with larger Hispanic populations. This is one of the reasons I am going to Rancho Mirage to shop for groceries instead of the closer Latin markets that I would normally go to. I am trying to avoid children, as they do not wear masks and do not understand the dangers that are present, especially to older people. The higher end markets in Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert generally have no children in them, and it is much easier to practice social distancing. marylmi, It looks like people are going north on that bridge. My brother and I went to St. Ignace last summer and took that bridge, but it looked nothing like that. Comments (92)It's frustrating to me as a teacher that we are not doing more to make schools safe and prepared to meet this challenge and the next one that comes along. People need socialization, which is why we should have right from the get-go jumped on this like General Marshall did on the reconstruction of Europe after WWII. They knew if they didn't act at a massive scale, the misery of the war would undermine democracy and we'd just be back where it all started in another 30 years. I think its the same with this virus, infectious diseases are going to make a comeback, it has been predicted for decades by scientists aware of how the conditions present in the world would inevitably lead to that. I'm sure you all have concerns about your local schools, but mine were in tough shape even before this. In some cases, we teachers just make do no matter what, but now that our lives are at risk, it's sort of at the breaking point. So many teachers I knew were getting out of the profession even before this, due to lack of community support. Some schools will manage this better than others, and the weakest schools will of course have the most trouble, just as some people will have a lot of trouble surviving the virus while others not so much . . . Edited to add that I wish I could get my husband involved in the "pretend" or even real shopping for a truck to pull a camper. Comments (86)You're right, chisue, Well said. Other countries, interestly enough mostly undeveloped ones, are equally crippled by religious extremists. I think there's a third element equally present and equally damaging - ethnocentrism. It underlies and adversely influences people's attitudes, the country's political and military policies, among other things. And has for centuries. Just as a simple example, think of all the military actions the US has had in our lifetimes. Aside from the Korean War, all were needless, mostly unilateral and unsupported by other countries, and futile. But they continue. Our geographic isolation and poor educational systems are contributing factors. As a nation, we're ignorant of the world we live in. We all hear too frequently sentiments of a nature like "thankfully we live in the best country in the world, where people can live in freedom". Uninformed and baseless views like this are widely held among people who know little about the world outside of the US, and often have never studied about the world nor ever travelled abroad.
