What type of Privacy Divider would look good inside my room?

I live in a dorm with a roommate, and I don't really have any privacy when I use my computer, since the head of my roomates bed is directly behind my computer screen.

I tried to see if he wanted to turn his bed around (since not only would it give me more privacy, but also flow with the room better), but he doesn't want to. So I was wondering, is there was some type of privacy divider that I could get to put behind me, and that would fit in well with the room?

Look into Shoji Screens, they work wonders for privacy.....

Can you move your furniture? Maybe put your computer desk down at the other end and your bed up where your computer desk is. It seems like any kind of privacy divider you tried to use would block that hallway and not allow you to move your chair.

Thanks cyn - the porch is 7ft deep. We gain a little space by having no railing (it's only 18" high except at the end where we did need to put a railing). I don't know that we could have put a coffee table in front of a LS though. Might have to put things on angles. I just don't want chairs lined up along the wall like Cracker Barrel! I would love to have a deep porch/sunroom like NHB and natal. Silly me, 7ft seemed huge on paper (with no experience to go by). There is one house in neighboring town I absoultely love - wide front porch with stone walls/planting beds and stone steps in front going down to front lawn with a pond. I think I love it so much b/c the porch is so big and has so much furniture you can tell it's made for entertaining. But extending the porch or stairs on ours would mean pulling out stonework and plants - not sure I'm up to that since we've spent the past 2 years putting them in. Our porch is just for us sitting out with coffee watching the birds in AM (though it's west), sitting and shucking corn in summer evenings, etc. Maybe we can build a big screened porch/sunroom out back instead of a deck off the FR/kitchen. But that's another post/another project. I'll just have to keep looking for front porch furniture - any idea on size/depth/arrangement of furniture to avoid the "Cracker Barrel" look? NHB - I love both your houses, you have done an awesome job designing and decorating. What did you ever decide to do with curtains in your DR?

Oops, Sandy, sorry, that was probably my multi-tasking brain not working when I read your post! Yes, my island was custom made along w/ all the other cabinets in the kitchen. To be totally honest, I found a picture of a Boos island that I liked and copied it - look on their website for ideas - you'll love some of them. I added a drawer to mine along w/ the slatted shelves that were on the *inspiration* island and it's the most useful drawer in my whole kitchen!! mahlgold - I forgot you were in my neck of the woods. I didn't get anyone in particular when I worked w/ them - I would call, talk w/ someone regarding whatever questions I had (even got so detailed as the ingredients in their finishes since my son has nut allergies and there was to be a nut-oil product used in the process) and EVERYONE that I talked to/worked with (from the templater to the installers) were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and nice to deal with - I'm sure they'll do well by you! Have fun on your marble hunt....I still love mine today as I did the day it was installed and it's had LOTS of use and abuse!

If it were me, and budget allowed it, I'd replace the door and the sidelights with a solid door for safety reasons, and you can match the period of the house. If that's not your concern, then how about just a roll-up shade mounted on the door to cover the glass, and then uncover it when you want the light. Or match the nice sheers you have. I would NOT want anyone to see in through my front door, but maybe that's me, and certainly would depend on the neighborhood you live in.

New carpet is the first option. It is the easiest answer. The 'perfect' answer is, of course, more of the kitchen floor tile. I'm not a fan of tile throughout the house, but other people feel differently. I'm sorry but this is the difficulty of using a 'wood look' product in small areas where wood does not traditionally go. It means you are faced with this odd dilemma. When you WANT to change out a living space with 'wood' looking stuff, you are stuck because you already have a wood-look product in the kitchen. And finding the same product a few years later is down right impossible. I wish you luck. I like carpet because it is an easy like-for-like replacement. The only other options you have are 'stone-look' or 'tile-look' or something like polished concrete or terrazzo, or cork (which is a serious option but most people can't live with cork).

Is there room to pull your bed down your wall, and either leave it facing the current direction, or reverse it, and put your computer desk where the head of your bed is now, or does the heating unit(?) not give you enough room there? Could you angle your computer desk up near the heating unit so it couldn't be seen from his bed?

With the old setup I used to have, my bed was the other way.

But it looks better with the bed (both of them) when they're against the wall on the window side. So really don't want to move it back, but I'm about to at this point.

Rearrange the furniture. A screen will just make the room feel more crowded, and you’ll save the money too. Good luck in school.

Why don't you move your furniture to solve your own problem rather than asking your roommate to move his furniture to accommodate you? Switch your bed and desk location so that your desk is by the window. Or if there is enough room, you could rotate your desk so that the screen faces either the wall or your own bed.

Not sure if your privacy issue is with him seeing you or what is on your monitor but if it is the monitor there are privacy screens you can get for it that allows only you to see what is on it.

I just ended up rearranging the bed back.

And It's not that I was trying to make him accommodate me, it's that I was trying to make our room look nicer, with having the beds be against the wall near the window. It's apparently a much better layout, based on the advice I have received on here.
