Honey oak cabinets and dark floors! Help!

I'll be moving in to this rental shortly...these pictures are of the kitchen and dining area and taken at different time periods with different paint colors...I don't have the keys yet to go in and take new pics. The dining room has one large wall that runs in to the living room area....trying to choose a paint color....there is some east and north light but not much...I don't want it to feel like a cave...suggestions on paint color...would pale oak by BM be a fail? I normally lean to cool neutral grays and blues...like Horizon by BM...but thinking of going with a light griege...but I don't want the cupboards to pull more orange...I don't want the room to look muddy at night...what paint color aside from a white would work? There isn't much light in the space...the kitchen is east facing and the living room has one small north window. My furnishings are beige, gray, taupe...I've included a pic of my current apartment with some of my furnishings...any help would be appreciated. The pics aren't great of the new place, but all I have. P.S. I'm not allowed to paint the cabinetry.

Comments (9)I too have golden/honey oak cabinetry & after almost 6 weeks of going to local slab yards & warehouses I decided to go with Madura gold granite for my countertops. But, with that being said, I highly suggest the same thing that others have suggested. Go to as many places as possible to see the actual slab, not just a sample in a showroom or online, because being that granite is a natural stone, one Madura gold (for example) can look very different from another Madura gold, it all depends on the different "bundles" & at which time it arrived at the slab yard. Find out what times & days your local slab yard pulls slabs & don't be afraid to ask them to pull more than one slab, so that you can see more than just the front slab. Some of our other favorites were "golden oak", "tuscan sunset" & "crema bordeaux", the crema bordeaux can vary greatly in it's color though, but is so beautiful. Each of these for me, here in ohio, ran roughly &50-$60 a sq ft, just to give you an idea of cost in my area. Comments (6)I have oak cabinets and worked with them as they are - though I did refinish them but kept them close to the same color. Pictures are in my "my pics" idea book in case there is something you see that is helpful. I know it is difficult to find pictures with oak cabinets right now. My trim is white. I painted my 70's dark stained pine many years ago. Comments (6)First things first: make sure you can PURCHASE more of the Pergo. And then, just for fun, make sure this is the Pergo that is water RESISTANT. If it is NOT, then do not run this in the kitchen. And if you have it in a FULL bath (shower/tub) then I recommend you look at a different floor - in the next 5 years. So, now that you have established it IS the water resistant Pergo AND you can STILL PURCHASE the product, you can decide if the colour clash with your cabinets will be worth it. Traditionally grey toned wood (like the Pergo) does NOT look very happy with orange toned wood (like oak cabinets finished in an oil based finish commonly referred to as "honey oak"). This clash can be reduced by working with a DARK GRAY counter top (a counter that is SPECIFICALLY chosen to match the Pergo). So....that brings us the the next question: what is your counter top? And then we move to "When do you want to renovate the kitchen?" If you have a kitchen renovation in your future (next 7 years or less) then you will want to hold off on any further decisions. When looking at new kitchen flooring, people find out very quickly how much they want a new kitchen. And by the time they get to renovating the kitchen, they either have to rip out the flooring (because they are changing the foot print) or they feel STUCK with a floor colour that dictates their colour scheme...and thereby feel cheated in someway because their floor doesn't let them chose the kitchen of their dreams. Whew. So much to be decided. All for a floor that probably won't work with the current cabinets/counters. Of course I could be wrong...especially if you have a stunning gray soap stone counter top. Comments (4)This is my wood kitchens idea book with both new and refreshed wood kitchens. Keep your particular wood tone in mind when looking at pics, but most of these are warm toned. Many have wood floors: https://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/75202366/list/wood-kitchens Natural oak works well with whites and creams as you can see in many of the pics. I have an oak kitchen and cream walls. Sage works well. Cool grays don't usually work, but warm grays - which often have a green or beige under tone can work well or very light gray/whites. In my home I have a traditional natural oak floor. It is not "on trend" but as it is in homes over a hundred years old and still used today - more timeless. Hickory flooring can be very pretty, but it has a lot of movement and color variations which might not work well with the oak cabinets. I refreshed my oak kitchen with new counters, apron front sink, backsplash and under cabinet lighting. I am very pleased with the results, but the under cabinet lighting was my most functional change and the one I would miss the most if taken away.
