Dark Green Cabinets Add Elegance to a Welcoming Kitchen

The owners of this kitchen in Ireland had gathered lots of ideas from the houses they’d rented by the time they became homeowners. For help with remodeling their 1920s home, they turned to Declan Keane of Celtic Interiors, who took all their ideas into consideration. His aim for this kitchen was to design a timeless, warm and functional space.
The range and range hood were positioned in the center of the back wall, and cabinetry was built around them. Built into the columns on either side of the stove are two small cabinets where the owners can store spices.
To keep breakfast appliances out of sight, Keane designed a countertop pantry. Bifold doors open to reveal an oak veneer interior with electrical outlets in the back.
A matching cupboard on the other side of the oven creates symmetry. Below are sturdy pan drawers that can hold up to 88 pounds.
To break up the dark cabinets, Keane designed letterbox glass fronts into the top of the wall cabinets. “There are lights inside, which add another dimension to the kitchen,” Keane says. LED strips below the cabinets illuminate the countertops.

The large island adds an extra work surface and a place for the family to gather around. White engineered quartz countertops add contrast against the dark cabinets.
A farmhouse sink in the island ties in with the rustic feel of the space. There’s plenty of storage in the island in the form of drawers, an integrated dishwasher and pullout bins.

On the other side of the island is a glass-front cabinet where the couple store beverages. It’s close to the dining area, which makes it easy to pull out a bottle when friends are over for dinner.
Keane gave a cohesive look to the island by installing panels behind the seating area that match the cabinet doors.
The sides of the island are covered in tongue-and-groove panels. In the seating area, the countertop is curved to avoid sharp edges.
The homeowners wanted to expose the brick behind the wall cabinets, so Keane added a simple upstand to the countertop rather than a larger backsplash.
