MCM flooring advice / Marmoleum

Anyone used the Marmoleum “chocolate blues” color and want to share photos/thoughts? Are you happy with it? We’re thinking of using it in our connected kitchen/dining area of our mid century ranch. We want to maintain the period without being too kitsch: ideas?

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI have no clue where the cork idea came from. I would however suggest you deal with the lighting before making any choices and that kitchen needs some serious work . I have a MCM ranch and we redid the entire house to work with how we live . We kept the windows, the huge fireplace but we actually switched the the kitchen for the DR and kept the rest of the layout just new drywall and doors . IMO you can keep the essense of the style but just bring it into this century. I think marmoleum is a great choice in that space but i would like to know what the rest of the flooring is. BTW we had that exact flooring in the kitchen of the house when we bought it. This is a pic of our LR and reworked kitchen. We actually put laminate that looks like slate all through the main floor living spaces since we have huge dogs .

Comments (25)We had Marmoleum in our old house (had it professionally installed). It was sheet, a pale yellow ("Butter" I think) with a red 1" border followed by a dark yellow 3" border. I loved the look- so great in our 1940s kitchen. But it scratched and gouged very easily. In the beginning I was really stressed about it. Was constantly on my hands and knees trying to clean the scratches with a toothbrush (when the dirt was removed from the pale yellow the scratches were much less visible). We had that floor for 12 years before moving and it was pretty scratched up. It was two adults, a dog, and two cats, but the scratches seemed to mostly be near the sink and silverware drawer, from dropping things periodically. I don't mind the gentle scratches it's the deep slices and gouges that look so bad. In our new house we are in need of a new kitchen floor and I love the Marmoleum look so much but am hesitant because of our experience, which does not seem abnormal from what I read here. I was hoping a darker color ("Salsa"?!) might not chow scratches as much, but it sounds like that will not solve the problem. Comments (11)I am not sure it would be good for a porch because if you left a window open and there were a sustained rain blowing in, you could have issues. We have a newly installed screened/glassed in porch and are going with stained concrete there. Carrie - where are you located? Put together, our 2 batches would make one nice big floor! Even your color would work with my 3. I am hoping that by word of mouth, I will find someone who wants it. I can tell everyone I know about it, but most people have no clue what it is and think of the old style cheap linoleum, when it is quite the opposite. Ours is the Click version. I am just so annoyed that I was told to order more, at significant cost, and that over $300 of that was for naught. Comments (58)Hi everyone! Life got in the way, but here is a look at the work in progress! Furniture: My other half said we could replace the coffee table! So I've been keeping an eye out for one of those and a credenza. For now, we stacked the media to mimic the idea of mounting the tv on the wall. Fireplace: Ive decided on lime washing the fireplace surround (stay tuned) Rug: My partner and his friend helped arrange it. I tried to use all the holy rug rules but took their considerations in mind since they did all the heavy lifting at a time when I appreciated the help (I hurt my back at work) The old couch has to be all on rug otherwise it cuts into the walkway outside. Comments (51)Yeah for scoring such a great deal on the tile. Woot! As someone said, you may want to consider how the flooring looks transitioning from the next room. FWIW, you can always use a couple of colors. I’ve seen pics of bungalows w/ old Lino where they use one color for the body of the floor and a diff color around the edges. FWIW-2, when I redid the guest bath 10 years ago, I chose a handmolded tile around the tub that I LOVED. (It was buttercup yellow). Loved it. Painted the walls beige. Now, I‘ve fallen out of love with the tile color and wish I’d used something neutral and painted the walls a color—an easy and much cheaper thing to change. So for my new kitchen, I’m going neutral and will use accents (window covering, decor) to add a pop of color and ....that will be stuff I can easily change out all the time.
