how to tell if your african violet needs water
Comments (32)Awww Anne,,,,,you're welcome!! You know, I look at it all the time and it is not that I don't like it. I don't know what the issue is. Never did that with a plant before. Especially a violet!!!!! Well, I think that piece would have broken off all by itself had I not done it on purpose! (oops!!!! did I say that out loud????) Well, I knew you liked it and honestly you don't know how close you came to getting the entire plant!!! Seriously! But glad the piece is doing well for you! I do hope this week is better for you. Slooooow down and take it easy. You know you are also recovering from knee surgery. They say it takes at least a year!!!! I know you are walking well etc, but you also need to take it easy sometimes!!!!! THAT is where eye candy comes in!!!!! (and this forum!!) lol Tomorrow is plant day for me. Gonna work on my plants and go as far as I can. Maybe even take a few pix! If I do I will post them. Rosie...See MoreA few questions about African Violets (potting and propagation)..
Comments (19)Update! Four of the babies have been removed from the momma leaf*, who is back in her materinity ward to see if she wants to give up any more. (because I totally need more unidentified plant babies) Three had good roots, one was like a little sucker on another. I don't hold out a whole lot of hope for it but it's in a wee cup, under a dome to see if it will grow roots. Sadly because it's soooooo tiny and rootless, I fully expect it to die. Anyway, I'll try to get pictures later on. ~ I have to (shamefully) admit that two of the babies were removed about a week ago and were probably a little bit too small but I was so impatient with my first attempt! So far they don't appear to be doing much except not dying, and not dying is a good thing....See MoreAfrican Violet Not Getting Bigger? Help!
Comments (12)KeOsika ... I'll just kind of reinforce what has already been said ... Your pot is too big and you need to separate the multiple crowns you have into multiple plants in separate pots. Your pots should be fairly small ... African Violets do better with smaller pots. I doubt that you have bugs either. And you will, likely, have to get some artificial light for your plant(s). A few hours from the window isn't going to cut it (and there's the risk of that draft). Consider putting one of the new CFL fluorescent bulbs in a desk or floor lamp where you can focus the light on your violets. Hold off on the fertilizer for awhile after you've transplanted them. BTW, if you have no roots on your crowns, just stick them down into the dirt in their new pots. That (and adequate) dampness) should help them to re-root. While ypur plants are getting readjusted to their new settings, find some water-soluble African Violet fertilizer, ... and begin to feed your plants with a very light solution (1/4 tsp. to a gallon of water). You can keep your leftover solution for future watering. Once your plants are 9 inches across, you can put them in a 3" diameter pot (with drainage). Once they get a foot across, you can pot them up to a 4" diameter pot. Unless you grow your plants wery large (18-24 inches across), you'll never need to put them in anything bigger than a 4" diameter pot....See MoreAfrican Violet failing to thrive...
Comments (5)Weeell, if it was doing great before but suddenly changed, then I'd look for either insects or an environment change instead of water. Sounds like it happened fairly quickly (which makes me suspect environment change). Your picture doesn't show any kind of obvious fungus, but we'd want to see below the leaves. The tips of a couple leaves are showing a blackish wilt though which could be due to over-watering and/or cold air. Perhaps if you can check carefully for insects, under leaves, along the stem etc. The Doctor Optimara site is pretty good. Barring insects: Did you possibly change it's location at all? Sometimes even a cold breeze can do this. Might not be a bad idea to take it out of the soil and carefully check to see if the roots/crown are mushy. If so, then you're probably looking at crown rot. You might still be able to save a portion of the crown (good job on grabbing a couple leaves). This is usually due to over-watering/letting it sit in water. However, if it's too cold-and it's wet as well, then it's a double whammy. If the roots and crown are OK, it won't hurt to repot it in new soil. Just don't get the new soil soaking wet-just damp. See if it perks up, and if so, then you can water from the bottom in a day or so. Best, Judy...See MoreNorthern Gardener (3b west central MN)
