Design Dilemma Home Decorating living room

What to do in living room/dining room

So, I am at a lost on how to decorate a living dining combo room. we want to move the dining room table to the family room kitchen due to simplicity of having young children in sight and prefer that look better than a family room in the kitchen. However, we have no idea what to do with this long room (see pics). We have a huge loft space that all the kids toys will go in.
We do want a TV in this space just not sure the placement of things. We would be buying new furniture to fill this space.
Any ideas would be most helpful!! Thanks

Where is the kitchen? Do you have a floor plan

Yes the kitchen is in the next room. These are the pics. The floor plan is similar but my is flipped...door on the left side, kitchen on the left side etc.

We had a sunken living room right in the middle of the house. No good reason for it, just an 80's thing. We got it filled and it's all one level now... 1000x better. But we did it during a whole house renovation which we are in the middle of right now. So we were replacing windows and sliders, updating electrical, etc anyway. It's a big job, especially how you explained yours and especially if you have sliding doors, baseboard heat or anything that will need to be replaced by filling it in. What about just filling the "seating area"?

I admit, I've never quite understood the idea of having both a living room and a family room, esoecially in an open concept house. I grew up in an era where houses had separate rumpus rooms, usually in the basement, where little kids could have their toys and bigger kids could hang out without interfering with or messing up the adult areas of the house. The living room was where the adults watched tv, entertained or read, and that area might have been a separate room, or open to the dining room. So I guess my question would be, how do you plan on using those two rooms that will give them each a clear purpose?

I would look at bringing the off white through the entire space and remove the chair rail. Then turn the mirror and move the wall sconces as celerygirl suggests. I like the furniture in the front room. Just pull the rug toward the sofa a bit so the rug is about 6" under the legs of the sofa. I think a new fixture centered over the table would look nice. Spend the money o real wood to match what you already have and IMo do that all through the kitchen too it will be money well spent. If it honestly is just not possible then IMO you cover th real wood with the laminate too since real and fake never work together . Have you looked under that carpet there might even be wood under there

If you are not using the space for a dining room, set up two seating areas. One with sofa and tv and one with center cocktail table or ottoman with four chairs.

The short wall on entry/front door side is where tv would be mounted and across from that on long wall a sofa or sectional.

I like the two seating idea. Never thought of a TV on that short walk because I thought it would look odd...good perspective thank you.
