Home built in 1935; need suggestions for light fixtures

3 years agoAre they looking to bring the lighting back into line with the era of the house? Hit Pinterest and surf for some. There are lots of available restored and rewired or reproduction pieces.
The ubiquitous schoolhouse fixtures are appropriate, although you can find some more interesting shaped shades.
Pressed glass was popular as well. It tended to come in an array of colors - pink, cream, blue green, and white most commonly:
It was also a time when porcelain was very popular. Alabax made all sorts of fixtures that were often billed as being "sanitary" (because porcelain wipes down easily) for use in kitchens and bathrooms especially. Avoid the ones with included electrical outlets, or leave them unwired. Sort of a hazard most of the time.
Another popular company made Porcelier, which tended to be more decorative. These are still pretty easy to find, rewired.
Milk glass is another choice. 30's shapes tend to be more Deco, lots of angles.
Though scalloped shades are common, too.
Or combinations of milk and clear glass.

Outdoor light fixture suggestions ?
Comments (7)A little hint from another Californian with that little Title 24 thing. We just added a family room with a back patio, last year. Our inspector told us, on the inspection BEFORE that one was going to be going in, that we needed either a fluorescent or a motion-detector/auto-off light. Okay, the one I bought had an auto-off/auto-on feature. But what is evidently "okay" is when your contractor installs it with a regular on and off switch inside. If you leave the inside switch in the OFF position, it will NOT come on. Our inspector was fine with that. Your mileage may vary. But I do understand "rather intolerant neighbours, who would give me a really hard time if the lights went on at odd hours." Our neighbors across the street leave their front porch lights on ALL NIGHT. One of their lights, outside of their garage, is SO bright and it shines in through my front door all the way through my house to the back family room. I do NOT need a night light in my house - I already have one at THEIR expense. When their light burned out last month, I did NOT tell them. But when they discovered it on their own, I was sad to see that they replaced the bulb. I'm sorry, but I wish they hadn't. Comments (28)Cosmetic stuff is easy and fun and totally within the bounds of DIY. You don't have to "gut" things to necessarily achieve big style improvements. Just paint, tile, new doors, ripping out nasty carpet, etc. can make a HUGE difference in the feel of the home. Don't think structural, think color, texture, etc. for the look and feel you like. A couple of thoughts: If the kitchen is melamine, it isn't all that great aesthetically, but it does clean up well. White kitchens are "in" right now and you could change out the pulls for wrought iron ones or less modern, more cozy silver ones, and do something warm and cozy with the backsplash color and and paint the walls and island, and curtains and appliances, etc. just for starters. Google "white farmhouse kitchens" or "white country kitchens" or "white cottage kitchens" for some inspiration about small appliances, patterns, dishware, linens, colors, etc. Consider the cabinets neutral for now. As for the bathroom, you can get many elements of the look you like by tiling the shower enclosure, ripping out the door and replacing it with a curtain, and painting or tiling the walls of the rest of the room, or even putting up beadboard. I agree with others though about thinking a lot about how it will clean up when considering bathroom finishes. Barnboard is lovely in small doses but a dust magnet. I know, I had barnboard paneling in a house I lived in once, it does NOT grow on you!! Use it as an accent. As for the bedroom with the tub, you can redo the surround and also put up a wooden screen around it for now. At the very least, you could build a half wall around the tub, like the photos Nosoccermom posted. Comments (5)I wouldn't try to "match" the outside light, but rather try to get something that works thematically. Paul Ferrante makes gorgeous leafy/branch-y chandeliers out of wrought iron and you could customize the size. 3 years agoReplacing all of the lighting in a house will be expensive. If that stretches their budget and they want LED lighting, Halo makes a 4" diameter surface ceiling mounted LED light that looks like a recessed light and mounts to standard ceiling boxes that are probably already there and it should be easy to add more..
The model number is SLD4. Its also available in a 6"' version SLD6.
I strongly recommend the warm light 2700K version.
Be very careful where and how you dispose of the fluorescent lamps. Don't allow them to break in your house.

There are two of these lights in the kitchen.This room is in decent shape and unless it has problems we haven't found yet, none of the wood paneling or ceiling will need to be replaced.
