We of course like everyone else nowadays, turned to the internet. We tried stuff like the fox urine pellets and some other recipe as well (can't remember it), but none of them worked. It started in the yard. Eventually one hole turned into multiple holes, three of which were around the foundation of the house. Then we found one in the garage. We left the door open thinking that it would just run out. Well, appearently, it had tried to chew it's way out buy chewing on the plastic strip at the bottom of the door and made a hole for itself. By then, it decided that it liked our garage and decided to stay. That's when we turned to the one solution that was supposed to be quite effective, but very cruel imo. Here it goes. You fill a 5 gallon bucket half way with water. Put a plank leading up to the top. Chipmunk runs up to feed it's curiosity and takes a dive. Then because they can't get out and are poor swimmers, they die. If they get too smart some people suggest floating sunflower seeds or a plastic bag on top of water. I know it sounds mean......we only tried it because it was now under our roof. We found evidence of it trying to chew through drywall into the house. Started, but didn't get through. Sooooo we set the rig up one night. We checked on it in the morning and there it was. A water treading chipmunk. I sent the hubby to take it to the edge of the community and yes it was alive and kicking when he let it go. It worked a second time in the yard. This time we didn't get to putting the water in. We just put the bucket out there and it caught another. Final word, if you hate the idea of killing them, try putting plank up to a 5 gallon bucket and see if you catch it that way to relocate it. If that doesn't work for you or you have the stomach for possible having to get rid of the body, try it with the water. Some people reported to catch numerous chipmunks this way in a very short period of time....See MoreGet Rid of Chipmunks
Comments (4)Betsy, I'm having the same problem. I also have voles the last 2 years. I didn't think they were here this year, but my wonderful dog Samantha was so proud of herself after killing one. So I now know they are here. Last year I set traps and caught about 10 and then I got a chipmunk. I was devistated. So I went out and bought a Have A Heart trap, so I wouldn't kill the chipmunks. Well now they are borrowing in my daylily beds and exposing roots. I filled in the holes also and the tunnels are back. I think it's time to stop feeling sorry for the chipmunks now. Go to the store and get those cheap wooden mouse traps. That's the only thing I was able to catch them in. They seem to escape out of the Have A Heart trap I have. Just put a dab of Peanut Butter (VERY tiny) on the trap and set it. If you put too much on, they grab it and run. Good luck! I'll be joining you....See Moregetting rid of chipmunks
Comments (30)Reporting successful results with the Pool of Death. My love affair with the little Chippies ended this year when they have decided that our garden was their turf and created tunnels and tracks networking all of their feeding grounds (our bulbs). Worse, they have completely undermined the stone walls lining our driveway, creating a genuine safety hazard, never mind a ~$6K masonry bill. After reading this thread and it's predecessor, I set up a PoD and drowned two chippies last night. I used a ramp made of a 2x4 to which I stuck a trail of peanut butter blobs dotted with sunflower seeds. I left a solid layer of sunflower seeds on the surface of the water. I really do love the little bastards (I have a large framed photograph of one of them hanging on my wall), but the population needed to be controlled. This method is potentially more cruel but a lot safer and potentially more legal than my alternate method which is a pellet gun shot to the head. Sorry Chippies....See Morechipmunk control
Comments (10)A few weeks ago chipmunks started attacking my tomatoes and they've stripped 4 of my 6 plants. So a few days ago I decided to get serious and I went shopping. Yesterday I set out a small Havahart trap, a medium Havahart trap, and a Rat Zapper Ultra electronic trap. So far they've managed to steal the bait from the medium-sized trap without tripping it, or they trip it but they're so fast that they get out before it closes. But the laugh's on them - the bait is One Bite Bar - a bromadiolone based rodenticide. The small Havahart trap has trapped 2 of them, which I drowned in a utility bucket filled with water. The Rat Zapper Ultra has also killed two of them. All of this is just in the first 24 hours. I can hear a lot more chipmunks out in the woods around my house so this might go on for awhile....See MoreStax
