Favorite tape measures?
Comments (26)Hi I have always preferred a "layout" style tape- this is what I call a tape where the blade locks automatically upon extension- you must press a button or lever to get it to retract. This goes back to my framing background, where a tape that stays out is very handy. For a while Craftsman was the only brand I could find selling them- Stanley made them in the early 90's but they had disappeared of late. Recently I discovered a cheapo model at HD, and it is superb in its action. The auto lock is extremely firm and positive, so I have demoted the Sears one to backup duty. These are basically 3/4x 25 or 30' Once upon a time stanley had a 3/4x33' powerlock that I liked. Any others are too heavy. I keep a cloth 50' tape around, and have been known to use a 1/2x12 from time to time around the house. A folding rule has its place in the toolbox also, for it can make exact inside measurements like nobody's business. Other than that, whenever possible, I'm a fan of "hold it in place and mark it"- bypasses many opportunities for error that way. Comments (19)When DH and I were first living together, I would go pick SD up from school on his weeks and keep her until he got home from work. BM didn't like that she was spending time alone with me and would call DH to remind him and make sure I am getting her on time, etc. She wanted to run the show when SD was with us. She also complained about not being able to call SD because DH gets home and we are busy with dinner & getting ready for the next day & bedtime. So, I would pick her up and hand her the phone & have her call her mom to tell her how her day was. By having the child call their parent, you are putting the control back in your own hands as YOU decide when the call takes place... it can't interfere with your plans and BM can't argue that she isn't getting contact with her child. My SD's mom would not answer her phone so I would make sure SD left a message & would have her try again later. BM would try to call back later (after SD's bedtime) and expect us to get SD up to talk... DH told her NO, answer your phone during the day when SD calls you. (at the time, she was not working so there was no reason for her to not answer her phone) It was the same "control" issue. She wanted to control the situation and when she went to court to say she never got her calls, we had phone records to show SD called her many times and it proved that BM never answers her phone....See MoreDrag out those old VHS tapes!!!
Comments (12)About 20 years ago, I had some "silent" home movies compiled and put on a VHS tape. I put it away and never thought much about it. A few months ago, I remembered that one of those old movies was of my nephew on his 3rd birthday. He is now 30. I have the machine to copy VHS tapes to DVD, so I decided to do it for him for Christmas this year---but never got around to it. Then my mom died in October... A few weeks ago, I decided to do my nephew's tape. Little did I know that I had old home movies of my folks' 25th wedding anniversary and other videos of my mom. In one of them, she gets right up to the camera and "mouths" the words: I love you! I bawled like a baby when I saw that but answered her aloud, "I love you, too, Mom!" That prompted me to go through some newer videos (18 years old) and found even more of my mom. Seeing her on film was such a healing experience for me... I am now making DVDs for my sisters, my dad, and one of mom's sisters. I hope it is as comforting for them as it was for me. Sorry to go on and on. But yes, people should watch those old movies, preserve the ones and VHS tapes, and keep making more movies! Not sure why DH and I ever quit....See MoreScary situation: man pulled out a gun
Comments (43)Glad this turned out well Glenda. —-It’s so much more than gun laws in smaller countries. It’s how criminals there, are not coddled and babied like they have no responsibility for their actions. In reality, not counting the crime infested inner cities, taking out suicides, accidents and such, the USA is average to better when it comes to gun altercations. But of course gun statistics ball up all the variables. Still when it’s you sitting next to a crazy person, they are not thinking about laws. I have been through training and background checking when I bought a gun. Picked it up after 35 days. Not planning on being irresponsible and losing my rights. I would definitely use it to defend you or my family....See MoreJon 6a SE MA
