Shutters & door for newly painted exterior
Hi there,
My wife and I just had our house repainted white (SW White Flour) to update it from an old, faded yellow with blue shutters. We are thinking black shutters, and a black window box underneath (the left window). Would you recommend "real" wood shutters or would vinyl suffice?
Re: the door, we like the idea of stripping/staining to stain with a special walnut but understand the end product may not look great since the door appears to have already been painted a couple times in the past. Would you simply repaint (if so, what color) or buy a new door altogether?
Lastly, we were also considering limewashing the brick. Does anyone have thoughts on how that would look with our other preferences?
Any other input/tips would be appreciated as this is our first house and we want to get as much of the cosmetic stuff done before our first little one arrives later this year.

3 years agoI recently saw a front door in a high gloss finish that was spectacular. I image getting a smooth finish would be difficult. I would get raised panel rather than a slat version for the shutters, since the clapboard and brick have texture.
Here are some options from Benjamin Moore's historical collection. Gray shutters with an accent door.
Or a red door with either a green or blue on the shutters.
I think you should bring the height of the two bushes down so that they are not covering the windows.

Comments (11)I like your house the way it is. I do feel the large shrubs on the right side look squatty and the squared off ones by the step don't look natural. I really like the yuccas or whatever they are on the left side under the tree. They add texture. I would add something else to the other side, hosta or small rhodo and evergreen planting. Comments (20)Oly - Don't mind sharing at all... Its 3100 sq/ft, 4 br and 3.5 baths. The balcony area is off the bonus room and not the master. Here are some pictures from soon after we moved in so it looks a little bare but truth be told we are still trying to get the place properly decorated! Maggie - thank you very much... I was just trying to find out what company did the shutters so I could find the exact color but wasn't able to get that info. It was one of the color options from the shutter manufacturer so we didn't pick out the paint at home depot or whatever. I'll dig around some more and hopefully get the color name to you. Comments (2)Dark blue, black and brown are not “pops of color” in my book! But maybe they are in yours. But you definitely need to get the brick taken care of first: the shutters kept the brick from aging as much as the exposed brick. I think there’s a special cleaning method for brick—make sure you use a reputable company. Are you painting the siding? If that’s the front door, it definitely needs a more impressive entrance.
