roses blooming, transplant now or later?
Comments (4)maybe I'll just wait then, because I don't have time to put the arbor together, either, I need my husband's help... and I'm so busy and they have buds all over them. I'm afraid if I move them I'll miss their flush, and I'm really looking forward to that since it's their 2nd year in the ground. If they send out big canes, I guess it's ok if they're sprawling all over, I can just try and clean them up in the fall. (I'm moving climbing roses to the spot for the arbor)...See MoreMoving mature brugs - now or later?
Comments (6)The neighbor has the right to trim off anything that grows or hangs into her property. Most people leave things alone to keep the peace. at least she staked it instead of cutting off most of it. I have a neighbor's Ash tree that hangs over the fence & shades my garden too. It's so tall, I can't reach it to trim off the offending branches & it won't be getting any smaller. I will probably lose a big part of my garden in a few years unless the Emerald Ash Borers get to it & kill it off (great people other than that one ugly tree & their only one so they love it). Your neighbor won't be tilling up your brug roots, will she? Linda...See MoreCan you move a rose now?
Comments (8)Bella Rosa, Every time I have moved a rose in the fall, I later regret it. I like to get things done right away, but I have learned to resist my impulses when it comes to moving roses in the fall. When I move a rose in the fall it invariably gets off to a slow start next spring. By season's end it has recovered to the point of being essentially the same size that it was exactly one year earlier! When I move a rose in the spring, exercising the greatest care I can, doing it before its dormancy has been broken, but right after the ground has thawed, the rose does not even skip a beat. It takes off like nothing happened. So my advice is to put off your transplanting until spring. What you could do now is dig its hole in its new location, check to see if its new location needs soil amendments if needed and do that now. Then, when in late winter/early spring, you pop your rose out of its present spot (securing as much of the root mass intact as possible), you just ease it into its new hole, lickity split. Watch it take off! Moses...See MoreCan I move a rose to the ground now?
Comments (8)My garage is attached but not heated. I have overwintered roses as well as other plants successfully by putting the pots close to the inside wall without additional protection, and they actually wake up and bloom earlier than their outdoor counterparts, so I believe the garage provides a micro environment that is zone 6 or higher. I have also heard that non-attached non-heated shed is no more than a wind breaker and won’t protect the plants much at all. I didn’t know transplanting dormant roses is common. I will definiteLu experiment with this using my least favorite ones first :)...See Moreseil zone 6b MI
