Can I move my Rose NOW?
Comments (3)Only if you can dig it up losing abolutely no soil from the root ball. If any soil falls away it will be like planting a new bareroot, and in the heat we have at this time of the year, it would be almost certain death. Your water restrictions could be a problem also as you would have to water deeply and often until it got re-established again. If you decide to chance it, cut back the top growth so the roots don't have much to support. It would probably die back anyway....See MoreCan i move Carpet Roses now?
Comments (5)The best time to move roses is when they are dormant, basically the winter months in your location. The root structure of most roses makes it hard to get a good root ball, so most of the feeder roots will be lost or disconnected. However, I am planning to move a rose tomorrow if the soil isn't too wet, because I need the space now. I will remove the soft growth and maybe half the leaves (starting from the top) in order to reduce moisture loss. I will use a lawn chair to provide temporary partial shade, soak the site deeply, and water lightly every sunny day for a while. I will try the two-shovel trick Paul Zimmerman suggests in the Ashdown Roses youtube video about moving roses during the growing season. I successfully moved a rose around June 1. Of course, it is cooler here than in Alabama....See MoreCan I move them now?
Comments (4)You are unlikely to kill them, but there will be less of a setback if you wait for dormancy. Late winter is probably the best time. The best time to plant the replacements is also late winter/early spring for bareroots and mid-spring for potted roses. If you act now you lose the fall flush on the old plants....See MoreCan I move a rose now?
Comments (2)You are in a comparatively mild zone but the roots will not be doing much from now until the top starts to grow again in spring. So, if moved before then and it turns nasty it will be like a big cutting sitting there. Might as well wait until just before new top growth starts....See More- 5 years ago
