Can I move them now?

Thinking of moving sydonie and a China to another part of the yard and bring another two roses out to replace them. These have prime spots and while I like them there are other roses that I like more. Will I kill them if I move them now?

You are unlikely to kill them, but there will be less of a setback if you wait for dormancy. Late winter is probably the best time. The best time to plant the replacements is also late winter/early spring for bareroots and mid-spring for potted roses. If you act now you lose the fall flush on the old plants.

I'd wait until Nov/Dec rather than move them now. You will avoid the potential for severe shock. Also, now you'd have to water them every day and if you wait they won't have to be fussed over so much.

Hi Christina, You should wait til the Daffs are done blooming to move them. Make sure you dig deep to get the whole bulb (at least 6 inches) they should also be replanted at this depth. The Glads can be transplanted now without any harm. Get some bulb fertilizer and add a shot of that too. Jen

Wait for the leaves to die back; if you can wait a week or two after that, even better, as the roots continue to bring in nutrients for a few days after the leaves are completely dead.

I am in the same zone, and have been going nuts lately transplanting and dividing stuff all over, including lots of Echinacea purpurea. Ditto mxk3, keep plants well watered for at least a month or even better, until the ground freezes - every few days if it doesn't rain.

Well, I hope you can. Just got around to turning the bed of an old, overgrown garden that the previous owner installed years ago. We had tons of iris and after my hubby "mowed" the garden down I dug out tons of tubers. The iris were one of the last survivors of the garden. The poppies, daisies and black eyed susans had all run their course over the years. I finally got the time to do some major work in that plot and am trying to save what I can. I ended up with a 5 gallon pail full of tubers that I plan on replanting in a few days (after edging).

I've been moving roses for the last two weeks. I had to move one and that precipitated the domino effect. Just keep them watered. Actually, I move roses whenever....

Lori and Michael have the right idea, under ideal circumstances ... but I usually do what catsrose is doing. The best time for me to move a rose is when I have the time and motivation. Now is fine, if you keep them well watered. Later is good, too.
