Window coverings for quiet in the bedroom!
Hi
What would you recommend for a master that had large windows and is in a corner lot? I need to reduce the sound from street and open concept house. Designer recommended woven wood Roman shades and another recommended plantation shutters? There are temp shades now. I’m so overwhelmed!

Comments (8)What is currently up there are just temporary/paper shades 😇 We had honeycomb shades there before which were very similar but my son “mistreated” them and they would not go up and down. I was thinking of replacing the shades. So I thought honeycomb (even though he broke those before), roller shades, Roman shades, or maybe even wooden blinds. Comments (7)Roman shades might be a good option, then. If you could work with a local designer or anyone that does custom work, they could come out and make the best suggestions … and you could choose exactly the fabric you want. . if you like a more tailored look, I’d consult with a good blinds company. You could have them made for your window, too (inside mount). They don’t have to look exactly the same, just coordinate. Drapes on your window could work with just about any treatment on your door, too. I had a door like yours in the bedroom of my last house and had drapes on the windows, and a Roman shade on the door. If you want more minimal and ”clean” than fabric, solar shades would work. Comments (4)I’m a bit challenged trying to visualize this room as a whole. I think that how much use for going in/out the sliders needs to be factored in. The front slider next to the window is the most challenging IMO since there’s no room for any window covering to stack completely off the glass on the fixed panel side of slider. I agree the same fabric & treatment should be used for all windows. I think I would hang separate drapery panels over each window. For the front slider & window I’d use the same length panels for both slider & window for a better look when closed. That slider - I’d have drapes that open in middle & pull to each side. The corner fixed panel will always be partially covered with the open panel on left. The drape for panel that slides should stack completely off the glass so that door handle can be easily accessed. The window would be traditional drape open in middle & stack completely back off glass on both sides. Two rods for each window - sheers on inside rod & drapes on outside so the 2 coverings can be open closed separately. When closed, this wall would appear as a complete wall of drapes. As for color - don’t know if you’re wanting dark blue or thinking that’s room darkening. Room darkening drapes are available in many colors. Slider in dressing area should have same treatment but sounds like with 16” space on each side the drapes can stack completely off the slider on each side. Comments (5)Black out drapes will give you complete privacy when closed, so you could do away with the blinds. You have the room to stack the drapes to the side of the bedside windows…and to both sides with a center split for the large window if you want to open them. Curtain panel width is not the same as window width. The total width of drapery panel(s) should be at least double the width of the window (AND any wall space for stacking) for casual draperies, triple for a more generous, high end look....See Moresunshine3943

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoIn regards to noise reduction, drapery may be your best bet and adding a liner even more so. These will absorb the sound better than shutters or blinds. Rod could fit close to frame. You could even keep your blinds as they are good for privacy during the day if needed.
For the window above, window film won’t help with noise but will diffuse light a bit. A stained glass pattern could be attractive

3 years agoIs the arched window a concern? Do you need light and noise control from it as well? If the answer here is yes then plantation shutters are what will need to go with. Due to your sloped ceiling you won't be able to install a rod above that window or a woven shade on that window.
Additionally if privacy is a concern a woven shade generally has an open closed mentality. Meaning if you want any view or light in then they have to be pulled open. They do make top down versions but regardless they will always leave part of the window uncovered to get any light it. A shutter will allow you to angle the louvers to keep people from seeing in but still get light in the room during the day.
You answer here is the shutter and then if you need a truly black room for sleep install black out drapery with the plantation shutters.
That said there are other options.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoJust wanted to throw this idea out, after seeing the quote. If you purchase drapes and a rod from Ikea for probably less than $200, added a liner which is simple to do, you could test the sound proofing. If you don’t like the look, it’s not much money wasted or perhaps use in another room. Would only need a shutter made for upper window - try to imagine below (suggest a white rod so it blends better) with a window shuttered above. Hope this helps.
