Bedroom Blackout Window Coverings

We have 3 windows in our bedroom with regular blinds. We want to keep the blinds but add a blackout treatment. It doesn’t have to be completely blackout. We’re deciding on either adding roller shades that are outside mounted or doing curtains. If we do curtains what should we do for the 2 narrow windows (22”w)? Most curtains off Amazon seem to be around 50”w.

Any help is appreciated!

Black out drapes will give you complete privacy when closed, so you could do away with the blinds. You have the room to stack the drapes to the side of the bedside windows…and to both sides with a center split for the large window if you want to open them. Curtain panel width is not the same as window width. The total width of drapery panel(s) should be at least double the width of the window (AND any wall space for stacking) for casual draperies, triple for a more generous, high end look.

So for the narrower windows just do a single drape that go the sides?

Hey There: I don't know how dark you guys need your bedroom to be to sleep, but shutters do not give you a black out in your bedrooms. We have installed a lot of honeycomb black out shades between the window and the shutters to achieve this. Roller shades have a similar problem. The fabric is recess about 1/2 to 3/4 inch on each side to make sure the fabric can travel on the roller but this also allows for a lot of light coming in. Hi - beautiful room and love the rug and bed! I can't necessarily recommend a particular fabric for the curtains but I can tell you that I did a window treatment that extended almost two feet on each side of the window and full to floor (not dragged on floor), hung closer to the ceiling. It gave the room an incredibly sophisticated look. My wall looks like it's all window! I put shears under it and leave the shears closed during the day but pull the curtains back on each side. Also, I would recommended a white or ivory bedspread and fold your quilt at the foot of the bed. This way, the headboard isn't "fighting" with the coral colored quilt. One more thing - I have a black curtain rod so the room has "a touch of black," which is nice.

I prefer wood blinds or indoor shutters over solar/roller shades for day and night light control…. I’d have a blind company in for a consultation. With the blinds, I‘d have lined curtains to close when needed. On the door, you could continue the same treatments or use a Roman shade: Another idea for the door is built-in blinds. The window pros can advise you on them. I had them for my bedroom door at my last house, with a Roman shade. They have easy controls for opening/closing and raising/lowering. I may be wrong, but I think it’s possible to install them on your existing door. This board loves solar shades, and that’s certainly an option. I’ve had them myself and don’t like how they look when pulled down. Feels commercial to me, plus I don’t care for how they distort the view. But that’s just me, no right or wrong here. Do what works best for you. :)

A fabric roman shade would be pretty. Outside mount. I would not do drapery on the side windows. They would not be fun to open and close with nightstands right there.
