Banquette Seating - love it or hate it?
Comments (52)blfenton, I am sorry I missed your question about the lumbar pillows. They are IKEA pillows, and they are slip covered in that pattern, so it worked out well for us. I attached a link to the pillows--they come in several fabric covers and are $19.99 each. On our banquette, we have five right now. I also wouldn't want to have a narrow table, as I don't care to knock knees with anyone. Our table is 43"X 54" oval and has two leaves to lengthen it. The butcher block (and cushion) overhangs the cabinets a little bit, so that our legs aren't hitting the drawers or hardware below. I have sat on benches where the hardware was kind of in the way, and I kept hitting it with my calves, so I kept that in mind when designing this particular bench. I think having it done with springs and upholstered like real furniture as circuspeanut suggests would be optimal for seating. I would have loved that! I am certainly not skilled in that area and haven't the money to have it professionally done, so we went the budget route. One of the most beautiful dining rooms I have seen had a loveseat set in a bay window, with the table pulled up with chairs in contrasting fabrics. It looked elegant, yet totally comfortable--a place you would love to sit with the girlfriends over coffee and treats gabbing for hours. *sigh* Here is a link that might be useful: IKEA lumbar pillows...See MorePlease help us choose and design lighting and bling for kitchen
Comments (36)After much searching on LightingDirect.com, I think I have found a large island pendant that will speak to the island fan. I have also found my favourite semi flush light (most of them are not nice). We will have two semi flush lights in the kitchen for ambient light. These semi-flush lights offer uplight illumination. The large island pendant will off down lighting task light. There are matching wall sconces to go on the decorator plate wall, and small pendants for in front of the windows and/or over the clean-up sink area. The sconces and small pendants are from the same lighting collection as the semi-flush lights. The big drum pendant for over the island is a different lighting company. Here are my favourites. Please let me know what you think, and especially if you think the island light will go well with the island vent (be in balance too). Thanks, Carol Large light to balance the island fan for downlighting task light for over the 10 foot island (light is 19 inch wide with three lights) Made by Minka Lavery Kitchen semi-flush for general ambient light (gives up lighting to kitchen). Made by Maxim from their Finesse collection. Possible sconce on wall with decorator plates (goes with the semi-flush above). Made by Maxim from the same Finesse collection. Possible small pendants for area in front of windows and 1 or 2 over sink peninsula. Made by Maxim from the same Finesse collection. Now I need to calculate lumens (to make sure I have enough light and not too much), and fiddle with the pot light placement. I also need to find a way to Photoshop these lights into my kitchen to see if I am comfortable with the visual clutter. Carol...See MoreSmall Kitchen with Banquette? or Island?
Comments (17)The door from the outside opens in and towards the fridge. We are having the door replaced, though, and will talk about alternatives. I have another thread where I've gotten lots of new design ideas, so, we might be going with something a little different. Here's a link to my other thread. I'd love your input!! Comments (65)Thundersweet, The oringinal pictures of the islands shows the "farmhouse island" in red with a dark butcher block top! And there is also a cool little red stool behind it. Anyway, if you have red throughout your house plus red appliances it seems you like a little bling here and there. You would want a real dark red, maybe with a black glaze or wash over it so it doesn't overpower the space. It could just add that right amount of "spice". However, your style is clean and simple, Amish like, very nice and comforting, so I can see the Pasons island fitting in very well with your style. Now you gotta ask yourself, do you want to keep the kitchen style as is or do you wanna add some bling? But here's the thing, it's a painted finish so either way you go it can always be painted another color!...See MoreP P
