Both my daughters offered to bake me a cake, and I sweetly declined. Elery offered to pick one up from the grocery store bakery, LOL. Also declined.

I'm planning to bake a tres leches cake, something I've never made nor eaten. Mother wants biscuits, so I have local strawberries as a backup in case the cake is disgusting, then we'll pivot to strawberry shortcake. The ice cream maker insert is chilling in the freezer right now for some dark chocolate espresso ice cream to go with that tres leches. I'll be 65 tomorrow, so I might as well make it good. (grin)

Dear Pam and all. I think this is the first year it actually brought tears to my eyes. Just having met so many loveable people in one place--the place they all warn you about(the wwweb) and have them turn out to be my dearest ones even to this day. It has been a pleasure and a joy to have all of you for company here, in the garden and the various other places, subways with Joseph,the hills of South Carolina and pizza with Paul,so many gardens with Paula and Pam, warm Miller light in Rozanna's back porch at 9 in the morning, late night dinner with Joe and Kate and mucho poetry with Jon. We've had so much fun all this time, haven't we with the roses, so much love passed around. Amazing and glorious, Kate you had the best sense of smell being pug trained so that you didn't have to bury that elegant nose of yours. Christina, thank you for remembering me. Blend guy I've loved every moment of it. Thanks Paul, it all came out as you wished. Jon, I can't think of any inspiring I've done unless we're counting a small amount of addiction advocation I may have inadvertantly participated in. Everything else, Fang made me do. How kind of you, Melissa, who brought us gardening in Italy. Randy I find myself more eager to see your lilies bloom than my own. You mustn't tease me with Nur Mahal, what a little beauty. Sherry that is a beautiful Madame Caroline and Thank you. Joe you are welcome any time. Florence, gorgeous and heartwarming as always. Lori she is one of my very favorites as well, one bloom her whole first year, fingers crossed. Thank you. AnnT, the Beltline Bar seems like one of those places that never changes, it's been the same forever. Elery and I have been married 10 years and he'd never been there, so it's been that long since I was there. It hasn't changed except they used to have that plaster statue of a rearing horse out front, and now that's gone. I looked for the horse, that was my landmark, and it wasn't there! Elery's middle son, Chris, was talking about restaurants in Grand Rapids and I mentioned that there were hundreds. He agreed, but said that somehow, no matter what he planned, when he was in Grand Rapids he ended up at the Beltline. Not gourmet food, of course, much more American than Mexican, but still good... It was pretty much a perfect day for me, and today I spent the day in the garden, so two days that have made me very, very happy, as well as all the good wishes here. Thank you all again. Annie

The rose pictured above is a seedling from 2007, a cross of Midnight Blue X Lilian Austin. (27-07-16 is its code number) Its blooms are spectacular (and intensely scented) but the plant is a total dud. Its 13 years old now and still hasn't exceeded 24". But when it flowers well, I forgive it its shortcomings, at least for a moment. Stay safe.

Happy Medicare a day early! I get to negotiate that maze in a few months myself. I've often looked at recipes for Tres Leches cake and wondered what it's like. Good or bad, be sure to take a pic!! And enjoy your day!! :>)

Of course you're making your own cake! LingOL. :) Tres leches is very sweet, but delicious. I think dark chocolate espresso ice cream's bitterness is perfect for cutting that, and they'll look pretty together too.

I hope you have a very happy birthday and a great many returns of the day!

Thank you, everyone, for the flowers, the cards, the cake, the wishes. My cake is residing safely in the refrigerator, and the ice cream is in the freezer next to a container of freshly made raspberry sorbet. I'm impatient to taste it, but I'll restrain myself until tomorrow. Maybe breakfast?

It is a 50/50 love/hate here. Not my home but NY in general. I've tasted dozens of times. Various recipes. (they have it at work all the time). 50% run for it and fight over it, and 50% make barf face. I always just taste, like maybe a scant Tbsp. I'm a fence sitter. If it is most like a custard I like it fine. Not always super sweet.

Came across this recipe looking for rhubarb ideas. Interesting....Link, HERE

Naturegirl, unfortunately I did not get the good weather you wished for. We had a frost. (sigh) The cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc. were just fine. Peppers and tomatoes were not so happy. Elery and I found every bucket, basket, hotkap, cardboard box we could lay our hands on and covered those plants. The zucchini were just starting to peek through, and I think I'll have to replant those, but everything else was just touched or escaped unscathed. So far...

The cake was good. Wet, but good. Not custard-like, but soggy-cake-like. Not bad soggy, but soggy. I added a layer of dulce de leche because I had a can of that in the pantry, and it was a good addition, I think. I took pictures but have not loaded them on the computer because I've been busy saving the garden and entertaining Mother.

I will, though, I promise!

Sleevendog, I'm thinking I might like that rhubarb version better, I'm definitely going to try that, so thanks for the chicken AND the cake recipe!

Elery built me two new planter boxes for herbs, I got a Tractor Supply gift card (Elery says you might be a redneck if most of your wardrobe comes from the farm stores, LOL), a new tarragon plant, a sprinkling can from The Princess, which she painted to say "Grandma's Grow Op - Water Supply" on one side and "Property of Ranchito Costa Lotta" on the other side. Of course, it was a plastic sprinkler and she used acrylic paints and when she tried to peel the stencil off all the paint peeled off and so the can is again green plastic, LOL. Ah well, it's the thought, you know.

My brother called twice asking whether he had told me happy birthday yet and my Mother kept asking who was having a birthday, LOL. They're both confused, which is kind of interesting since they live in the same house...

Ashley and the girls will come over later this week, after Mother goes home. And so, I can stretch the birthday celebration out maybe all week!

Madonna, it's still my birthday WEEK, so it's all good.

Nancy, my Mother asked me why I was hugging the computer, LOL. She stays up late. I told her that I was sending hugs to one of my Cooking Forum friends and she just nodded and smiled, like it wasn't unusual. (grin)

Sol, my dear friend, don't think I've missed you. I'll hug the computer again, just for you!

Now I'm going to bed, I think, tomorrow I'm canning pickled asparagus, the first batch of the season, yum.
