Should I paint the pine in my family room and/or my fireplace?
Comments (5)yep. You can liven up the area without sacrificing the depth & warmth of that rich knotty pine paneling; replacing the cool-color carpet with warm wood flooring will be more harmonious. Once that's done, live with it a little while, & then you might think about doing something to the fireplace-I usually think red brick is too massive & dense for any building other than a school, & definitely too much for the interior of a home, so I'd probably lighten it up. Then you might think about replacing the cool-color paint on the walls with a warm color that would tie the room together rather than driving it apart. (yes, you are correct: I am incapable of doing just one thing & leaving other things alone!). It's a lovely room, & I hope you have fun with it!...See MoreHow do I transform my mossrock fireplace in to this white/bright look?
Comments (2)there are supposedly pros who specialize in cleaning stones, tiles, and regrouting. Check your local Angie's List, call one or two, and see what they have to say I personally would't paint stone, I don't like the artificialness of that solution, but maybe cleaning(sometimes stones do need major cleaning..and get it) will give you results you'll like well enough. If you think that stone doesn't correlate to style of your house(which can happen), that's a different problem altogether, which I'd approach with rethinking the whole fireplace....See MoreDark Mantle on fireplace should I paint to match trim?

Comments (43)I agree with "bethperson" about removing the top uprights. They are drawing the eye to the ceiling rather than framing the fireplace. I would not cover the niche with doors as it looks spectacular with the horse and other objects in it. I would kill for a spot like that to display things and make seasonal statements. I might consider a lighter color on the back wall of the niche to provide a contrasting backdrop for darker objects. You appear to have lighter paint behind the sofa so I would try a bit of that on the rear wall of the niche. I also agree with "bethperson's" idea of beefing up the mantel. I agree that the wood seems a bit orangey but if you are planning to replace your floors someday you might want to decide then on a color or wood stain that compliments the floor. Until then just removing the top uprights will minimize the overwhelming effect of the wood color. Also, I believe that wood is not a precious substance. It takes a little courage to paint or stain it sometimes but unless it is a pricey, endangered or historically antique wood just do what makes you happy. That's what a house of your own is for....See MoreS M
