I need help redoing a mantel
I'm trying to update my mantel & found a mirror on clearance. It is way too high and doesn't look right (bottom pic). So I found a clock I had elsewhere in the house and would like an opinion on that. Is it too small? I was just going to set it there but it would probably look better if it was hung higher. Plus should I paint the clock or just leave it as is bc I would probably screw it up (LOL) If I do paint it what color & just use a spray paint? I have blue leather furniture. I read the rule about the middle (main piece) of the mantel should be the highest & biggest. (BTW, how to you put a hanger into a brick fireplace). And, of course, I need ideas on other pieces to include. I'm on a tight budget!

Comments (5)Quite a conundrum! Have you spoken to your local window guys to find out what's available? I have in-swing andersen doors in several rooms, and they seem to seal shut nicely. But they originally came in without the ordered Prarie style grids, and it took a couple months to get that straightened out. So if you want anything custom, you may have to have the broken one boarded up for a considerable period... My doors aren't paired, but my sister has an andersen set that is. One panel comes in, the other goes out. She'd have prefered both going out, but then the snow can block them from opening. The in-swings eat a huuuuuge amount of floorspace, though: it looks like your room would be pretty compromised if you couldn't put any furniture within 3 feet of those windows....See MoreI need help w closet!!!!! Comments (2)Adding that archway would completely mess up the living room layout. Furniture arrangements would become very difficult and it would become a traffic path. Maybe consider shortening the wall, so keep the bench and closet, but lose the second smaller coat closer and maybe even shorten the other stuff. It will still create an entry way and block sound from the living room but it wouldn't create a super long closed in hallway. You may want to also reconsider the kitchen area. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI like the clock (or a round mirror) and think they’d look good with a somewhat layered look. I think it’d look nicely balanced, and “softer” around the big square shapes in the area. And you wouldn’t need to paint the clock if you used other art around it. I see a few bricks it matches well.
If you use the clock, I’d move it to the left just a bit. It doesn’t have to be in the middle, unless that’s the look desired. You may have decor around the house you could use, or find inexpensive candleholders, pottery, smaller framed art, whatever. Your little heart art on the hearth could be used in a display.
Layered looks (and of course you could use less items. These are just general ideas):

Another inexpensive solution (and looks great) ... off-side the clock, and put items on the other. Keeping it simple, but cohesive:

3 years agoI love the brick fireplace and the idea of a mirror. With or without the mantle, mirrors look beautiful on brick, and it’s also excellent Feng Shui to have mirror over living room fireplace, in most setups.
And I would opt for a round mirror, as well.
