Inexpensive ideas on updating a bath to be more modern?
Comments (29)Thanks, all, again. As you exit the bath, the kitchen is on your right. It is all one large open room -- thus my concern with the bath colors. nosoccermom: there is little to no grey in the tile. Any grey is just the shadows. If anything, there is a yellow undertone. I've looked at gel staining (for the kitchen) and read about all these disasters in the Kitchen FOrum when people try to do light maple. It makes me very afraid. I found some granite and quartz vanity tops with white sinks in prefab sizes online that may fit. I will check out the local warehouses today. The fortunate thing is that these builder vanities are a standard size, so no custom fabrication is needed. I decided to "Chip It" (the Sherwin Williams app), the photo of the rug and floor. Here's what it came up with. Sturdy Brown seems nice. I'll pick up paint swatches and see how they work with the other elements....See MoreNeed inexpensive ideas for kitchen decor!
Comments (18)Is there a particular style you like? I like a relaxed cottage style which is somewhat inexpensive. The current on trend style does tend to be a little minimalistic on decor with a focus on beautiful surfaces like countertops. More homey kitchens of the past depended more on decor. I have seen many really sweet cottage kitchens that have ordinary cabinets but the room was done in such a pretty manor that the kitchen was charming. Sometimes with older cabinets, going for a vintage style can work well. The center panels are interesting, but if you wanted to you could have the center panel removed from some of the doors and replaced with glass. Your could display something pretty or use a beaded or frosted glass to keep the inside less noticeable. If you use clear glass and do like a cottage style, you could shear fabric behind the glass - any kind for any style. If you want more cottage style ideas just ask. My kitchen is in my "my pics" idea book and I have oak cabinets too. You have a lot of cabinets. Assess your storage needs well, and if you can do without some, you could remove the uppers along the window wall. You could just leave it open or put up a few shelves to put primarily decor items, though the lower shelf could be used for dishes. Beadboard or beadboard textured paintable wallpaper could be used as a backdrop for shelves. I did that in my basement kitchenette which is also in my idea book. No uppers - open space and pretty window treatment: Glass panel cabinets:This might not be inexpensive, but you could move the microwave and install a dedicated pretty stove hood - stainless or wood:...See MoreInexpensive update ideas for family room MUCH appreciated!
Comments (21)I wanted to provide an update! First off, we found some very trendy-looking laminate flooring for 84 cents per sq ft. We will be using underlayment that costs 25 cents per sq ft. So, for only $1.09 per sq ft, plus the cost of a few new tools, we’re redoing the floor. My husband will install this with some help from his brother, so we’ll save a ton on labor costs. As for the ceiling tile, I came across “smooth” 2x4 ceiling tiles online for only 76 cents per sq ft. Nothing fancy, but worlds nicer looking than the “basic” tiles that are only marginally cheaper. Add these tiles in with our ceiling grid covers, and it’s going to look fantastic! With new paint, new recessed lights and new light/electrical switch covers, and we’re going to have a room that looks great. Last piece of a very large puzzle to get our home truly move-in ready for a quick sale at top dollar! There are a few somewhat nicely done houses that just popped up on the market by us. One is about a half mile away, new construction. This house has contractor grade everything, including kitchen and bath, and is only slightly larger than ours. Looks nice and new, but we’ve got something that is quality where it really counts. I am hopeful we can list at or even higher than what they listed at. Can’t wait for our agent to see the finished product! Our fingers are crossed for a bidding war!...See MoreIdeas on inexpensive update to kitchen?
Comments (48)I think new black iron bar stools would be smaller visually. New modern hardware for the cabinets and paint. Any or all of those will have an impact, up to you and hubby to decide. Maybe start with one thing and continue until YOU are satisfied. I think you are chasing your tail with a new backsplash. It is fine until you change cabinets. That all changes when whats trending gets a new trender. Lol! Im so sick of white everywhere and the latest tile trend, that may be outdated in less than a couple of years. There may be light pendant replacements that may work with your existing lights instead of all new lights. Mine were only about $10-$15 each and my GF paid a ton of money for a similar fixture. She was not happy. Good luck! It looks great, but I know I’m always wanting to update a little here and there all the time. Just don’t let the peer pressure get to you. 😊...See MoreHannah
