Increased security for seniors living alone
Comments (24)Another Frugal Function for people living in (esp. seniors') apts. is that the first person to go to bed on one side of an interior wall taps on the wall before hitting the hay ... and the person on the other side of that wall taps back. Lets each know that the other is O.K. just before first person's bedtime. Then the person goes to the interior wall on the other side of the apt. and repeats the procedure (if s/he's the first one to settle). Then each of those two know that each is O.K just before bedtime. Caution: For the person living in an end unit, maybe a good idea to put a large sign on the (inside of the) outside wall, saying, "Tap here before bed and again in the morning if you like ... but don't expect an answer: the squirrels don't like to learn to tap on walls". (That's for folks who may be a bit "squirrelly", themselves). The last one to arise in the morning on each side of a senior's apt. taps again, and the first, who rose earlier, taps a reply: that way, each of those three knows that the other was O.K. some time after break of day. Cost? Zero. Peace of mind? Substantial ... not only to the people themselves, but to their loved ones who are concerned about them. When I was a missionary helping refugees get resettled ... we used to have a slogan (accompanied by some laughter) that said that part of a missionary's job ... ... was to learn how to make a nickel do a dollar's worth of work! Inflation having been what it's been over those 55 years or so since that truce that ended the active Korean War (still no official "peace" there) ... I guess that'd be about a quarter, by now. Enjoy your week, everyone. ole joyful...See MoreHow many states have you lived in?
Comments (54)I was born in Washington, D.C., and lived there till I was 27, when husband's job opportunity moved us to a D.C. suburb in MD, where we lived for 35 years. Upon retirement, we wanted to get away from the urban areas, but not too far, b/c our three kids lived there. We chose Wild and Wonderful West Virginia, which was an adjustment for me, since I had always been a 'city girl'. So, that makes one state--MD--and one 'District'....See MoreHow Many Will Be Home Alone For Thanksgiving?
Comments (37)This is my 3rd Thanksgiving alone. I went from cooking for 20+ people for 20 years to nothing after my divorce. While I was married all of my family passed away except my son who works today and my father who could give 2 you know whats. So even after 3 years I am so lost on Thanksgiving. Where for the week before and day of I was sooooo busy preparing and cooking to nothing. I wake up and realize I have not a darn thing to do today and it is just like every single other day. Seems so odd back then I prayed for someone to take over one Thanksgiving because I was exhausted from doing it every year now to I wish I had it to do again. Silly I know. Christmas is the exact same way for me. I used to host Christmas Eve open house with a Ham dinner and all the fixings, clean up that night and get up Christmas morning do the whole Christmas Dinner thing now again nothing. So Christmas I go to an amusement park and ride rollercoasters all day with my son and that is our new tradition,...See MoreOh! The disadvantage of Living Alone.
Comments (33)I picked a tiny tick off me last night after weeding the blueberry cage area. I picked off another on and set it on the sink for a second. I looked back and it was gone ;-( -- I hope it was just a bit of grit or thorn. This season not so bad & I think it might be because of all the wild turkeys (21) and the three opossums. The opossums don't hunt and eat ticks, but they accumulate them and fleas. Because they keep themselves very clean, they tend to (literature suggests) eat the groomed off ticks. I actually find that hard to believe -- eating a tick? They have poor visual acuity, so I don't think they see and grab ticks. They do eat slugs, voles, moles, mice, carrion and just about anything -- the more decomposed the better. But don't feed them meat (like chicken) off the bone. They need the calcium and nutrients in the bones or they can become depleted in dietary calcium and grow misshapen bones. Fascinating animals. Read up on them. Unfortunately they are very misunderstood, causing some people to harm them. They don't live but a couple of years. One reason is that they have short telomeres. I took some night photos and video of three ~ 7 month old (?joeys? There's a name for the young. Forgot it.) I've had many tick bites and picked many from my clothing, body, *eyelid* and pillows. I've experimented and photographed and video-taped them turning over when engorged. There's also a video of that online (YouTube). A well-designed little horror....See Morechisue
