Front door/exterior design decisions. 1950's brick ranch.
Comments (2)I would remove the shutters. (And you can’t add ones to the big window as they will not fit properly). Your storm is black, so paint the front door black. Would probably go with the color of the corner brick on the vertical siding and all the house trim, as well. The white is just too bright....See MoreExterior Color Decision - Hardie - what to pick?
Comments (4)Thanks so much! I plan on keeping the windows white and the shutters (black or BM Wrought Iron). After going back and forth a lot about some design issues I decided to keep the house traditional, in line with your suggestion also. Currently plan to use 9//9 windows on the front just to open things up a bit (feels a little dark inside) and add white water table and facia boards and to beef up the trim around the front door (much thicker white trim - flat columns look). We are also trimming out the dormers in white Azek so they will basically now be white vs the little bit of shakes. So far no plan for shakes - using Hardie Board Plank - ideally smooth siding unless I somehow find Harris Cream in the textured (textured is my 2nd choice)....See MoreNew exterior decision dilemma
Comments (9)I am a fan of Hardie materials. We have had some on our house for 20 years, and it still looks as good as when it was installed. Installation is more expensive than for wood products IME, and i will let you compare materials cost. In that same time period the other parts of the house have been painted 3 times. I would go for shingles rather than vertical siding. I would change out the garage door to something more attractive and in a color you like rather than matching the house to the garage door. I would go for a gray or brown in medium tones as suiting both the architecture and the wooded setting. Some judicious pruning may be in order, though I wouldn’t go as far as Jan Moyer. I do agree that the privacy fence as currently installed gives the house a feeling of being barricaded from the road. What is its purpose, and could that be accomplished with a more open fence along with carefully chosen plantings or with curtains of some type?...See MoreExterior colors help
Comments (2)IMO stone and brick never work together on the same house. Since the entry looks quite nice with the brick I would remove the stones and replace with siding them go to a nic egrayed green for all the siding . Gutters are not a design element and should be the same as the roof color to make them disappear. I do not like blues with brick so this is my fave with brick. You could also replace the stone with brick for a nice finished look....See MoreCelery. Visualization, Rendering images
