Suggestions for a frequent blooming orchid?
Comments (13)Baldan's Kaleidoscpe *is* beautiful, big flowers on a tall arching spike. Flowers are yellow with magenta stripes, with a magenta "glow" in the center. It is also an AM/AOS, meaning it has a high award from the AOS. It is also extremely vigorous, and blooms a long, long time. Mine has been in bloom since January. You won't be sorry with this one either. Again, I got this last May in bloom. I don't know how much longer it will go on, but it's already been in bloom for five months and looks to have a ways to go. $15 is okay for shipping. It's about the same for two or three plants at Norman's.....See MoreBrassavola Nodosa Orchid..... Questions.
Comments (35)I have struggled to get enough light for my B. nudosa. When I bought it it was maybe 4" tall, with 4 leaves (vendor said they didn't get any bigger). When mine started blooming it was after Christmas and it has rebloomed every year at that same time (Jan. Feb.) every year with more flowers. It never gets enough light to turn purple, altho' David Sander beside it is mostly purple, and it doesn't bloom (still small)but is growing roots at the moment.. Here it is when I just completed the greenhouse. After a year in the greenhouse. Today, waiting for even more flowers this winter. Just for fun. R. digbyanna (?) grows beside it and blooms in July, no purple. Richard Mueller hybrids nearby and they are blooming on every growth as it matures, much smaller plants....See MoreAtipical orange orchid - curiosity
Comments (7)First of all, Thank You All, for your rapid and referenced responses! I posted the topic, went out for a quick dinner, and came back to a filled mailbox! Gosh sakes, I've been busy! Looking at orchids (so what better to do on New Year's Eve?) on Bedford's and Norman's and google image, and just getting the most terrible Wants! After looking at the prices, I've also had a lot of misgivings about having tossed that orange Phal :( Mehitabel, no apologies...and for goodness sakes don't ever stop posting. I can eliminate Panang Girl and Princess Kaiulani because of their elongated flower shape, but the Bedford gallery picture of Brother Sara Gold 'Sogo F623' has just the right shape. The color is also close, but I don't remember any magenta, spots, or reticulation--though memory can be tricky. Terpguy and Brooke, Asconopsis irene dobkins is so close, but looks like it has a wand-like spike; however the Irene Dobkins hybrid, Ascps. Jiaho's Orange 'Jiaho' (Irene Dobkin 'Orange Delight' AM/AOS x Phal. Zuma's Pixie) is exactly the color I remember. The spike on my plant was odd looking, with branching at almost 90 degree angles. Each of you has provided a good piece of the puzzle to put me on the track of this plant. Thank you all so much for taking the time to help me figure it out. And Happy New Year--all of it--to all of you. Sweetcicely...See MoreMexican Buckeye and Anacho Orchid Tree success
Comments (7)Those orchids look like the blooms on hesperaloe coming up out of the ground, seems like the deer would chomp them down, do they? Pink asparagus (deer candy) About that important seed in your pocket, I always like surprises of finding a plant I thought failed or that I didn't have. This year my surprise was two sand penstemons (P. ambiguus) volunteers that showed up when I was trimming back grasses. I was very upset that my one and only plant had died last year, the one started years ago from seed I'd purchased from PoSW. This is my absolute favorite penstemon and I always saved every seed and sowed a lot of them by hand and tossed all the rest in that area but for some reason its not too successful from seed, unlike the other types. Last fall I'd planted the last saved seed in pots left outside and ended up with zero plants. I CAREFULLY moved one of the plants to a choice spot since it was hiding under a large grass. So far so good. It blooms for almost three months and is gorgeous, flowers so brightly white they are like porcelain. You mentioned Yucca glauca elsewhere and how pretty the bloom is, I agree with that. We have a lot of them coming up on the land we own out by Norman, in fact they are quite common in Oklahoma. Twice I've dug a few tubers, planted them and then dug them back out again. With my space issues I always rethink it and then decide I don't need it. Partly the plants don't look all that great unless they are growing in a big field where they form large colonies with lots of dead yucca leaves but even so, its good contrast in the grasses because they are the same height and those stiff spikes just look fantastic as you look across a field. They look great blooming from a distance but up close they look like a good place for rats to nest in....See More1beautylover2012
