How important is it to center a sink under a window?
Comments (14)Another vote for the second layout--I think it'll just look a bit off without the sink centered under the window. I went thru the same dilemma in my tiny kitchen remodel...maybe my solution will work for you.....have you considered an 18" wide dishwasher? Those extra couple of inches saved on the dishwasher side of your sink might give you room for a larger sink base still centered under the window. I downsized from a 24" to 18" Miele dishwasher, and really prefer the smaller dishwasher for my usage, plus it made the whole layout just work better. One other idea which might work if it fits with the look you are going for----there are quite a few options (Franke and Porcher for sure, and probably others) for 24" wide apron front farm house sinks with squared off bottoms (as opposed to the curves of the Shaw sink) that can be installed right on top of shorter 24" base cabinets, so you can maximize the size of the sink in the sink base. Here is an example of the kind of sink I'm talking about(Porcher): Hope this helps!...See More36' induction cooktop: center under island hood?
Comments (7)Buehl and Graciemay, thank you. We bought a discontinued Miele hood because we got such a great deal on it and it was still the most expensive appliance we got for the new kitchen. The specs are at the new house but if I remember correctly it is approximately 42 x 27 but I just did a quick conversion from centimeters to inches when we decided to buy it on the spot because we didn't want to lose the deal. It is bigger than the cooktop, particularly in the front to back dimension. DH and the KD made the decision to move the hood back a few inches from the front edge of the countertop because they are both tall, the hood has fairly squared off edges, and I felt it wasn't my short forehead that would ever be in danger of getting gashed. Now that I see how your hood looks, Graciemay, I'm not worried that the appearance will look off since your hood (and whole kitchen) look fantastic. I guess we won't have ideal function, Buehl, but I'm hoping for the best. We don't usually make a lot of smoke and smell in the house since we grill outside a lot. Maybe this will help me to persuade DH to ease off on making blackened grouper in the house....See MoreHelp with Gas Stove important options
Comments (19)may_flowers-believe me I have tried that approach. I have went round and round and to him a stove is a stove. It cooks food and he doesn't feel there is much difference between say a $800 stove and a $2k stove. I have used the tool analogy (and he doesn't buy top of the line but a good middle of the line which is where I feel I am at with the stove). I might have him come along and have a demo at the appliance store and see if that helps. He thinks we don't 'need' convection (doesn't help that his mother struggles with hers), electric oven, etc etc. He has agreed that he prefers a slide in and that also ups the $$$. He has a total mental block when it comes to appliances. I don't really care as much about any of the others but this one - it is an uphill battle! Because it's a new build I fear by the time we get to the appliances there won't be much left anyhow if we go over budget like it sounds most people do! Hopefully this is the worst of what we disagree on. Most other things we are on the same page and I am grateful for that. Because as of right now we are making the switch to gas I have been researching btu's and all that goes with that - he has no idea about it and I did not so gently point out the other day that they DO matter. He sees it as strictly cash outlay and that he could buy me 2 stoves or 3 for the price of a few I have looked at....See MorePlease help! Do I center my hood and range with the island?
Comments (1)I would prefer the more balanced work space over arbitrary symmetry to an offset island. Plus, you don't want the stove and sink aligned if somebody might be working at each of them at the same time. Maybe a single pendant, over sink? or interesting semi-flush lights, if your hood and tile really merit center stage? (most are not *really* as dramatic as all that...)Hanging the lights a little on the high side seems to be a common solution... Also keep in mind that as you move about the room, different elements will be prominent to your eye, so it's ok to have lights that cross the visual of the hood, especially if you need the task lighting. They too are a thing to enjoy....See MoreRelated Professionals
