How important is it to center a sink under a window?
Comments (14)Another vote for the second layout--I think it'll just look a bit off without the sink centered under the window. I went thru the same dilemma in my tiny kitchen remodel...maybe my solution will work for you.....have you considered an 18" wide dishwasher? Those extra couple of inches saved on the dishwasher side of your sink might give you room for a larger sink base still centered under the window. I downsized from a 24" to 18" Miele dishwasher, and really prefer the smaller dishwasher for my usage, plus it made the whole layout just work better. One other idea which might work if it fits with the look you are going for----there are quite a few options (Franke and Porcher for sure, and probably others) for 24" wide apron front farm house sinks with squared off bottoms (as opposed to the curves of the Shaw sink) that can be installed right on top of shorter 24" base cabinets, so you can maximize the size of the sink in the sink base. Here is an example of the kind of sink I'm talking about(Porcher): Hope this helps!...See MoreHow Clean is your Stove Hood
Comments (23)Rosie is right , the question is are you getting grease in your house....on the walls, cabs , furniture etc. That was the reason that I was checking all the surfaces in the areas surrounding the cooktop and hood. My baffles get very greasy and I run them 1xw in the dishwasher. I also wipe out the area where the duct begins and the surface covered by the baffles while I have them out. There is very little to wipe out in that area unless I let the baffles go for more than a week then there is more. The reason there is more if I let the baffles go longer is that their surface is maxed out and the residual goes past thus getting on the inner surfaces. Neesie you are wrong. Sorry but you are. My son is a chef and I have helped clean his hood system many times. Number one you have to have the heavy duct work just like for a/c, and I do, not flex duct. Number two you must have the hood fan on high and running prior to starting cooking., best is at least 5 minutes to get the air flow going. Number three you must continue to run it for a short length of time after cooking has ceased. Number four baffles must be clean, in the restaurant we do them every night. Number 5 the oil used must be clean in the fryer...we change at least 1xweek and we are open 4 nights a week. This is not rocket science but common sense. imrainey is correct , if you have sufficient cfm for the kind of cooking you do then the grease is captured where it is supposed to be...on the baffles...not in the duct work. If the duct work is getting full of grease, which leads to kitchen fires, then the users of the system are not doing so correctly or the system is not strong enough or both. You can easily tell if your home system is doing well by wiping down adjacent surfaces and seeing what you have on the rag. c...See MoreHow do I light a off centered 7' island?
Comments (22)I agree with Beth and M.E. Light the island with 1 larger or 3 smaller clear or light toned pendants with a metal finish of your choice to match your theme or hardware, or hood, etc. Center it to the island, so that you can illuminate that work/visiting space. It looks like you can pull off 3, because your island looks larger. I am doing the same thing in my farmhouse kitchen right now. I have a very small island though, so will do only one medium sized pendant, and I have no real focal point in the kitchen, so I am going matte black with it, grey cabinets, white quartz countertops, and antique brass hardware. Good luck!...See MoreRange Hood not centered with the island...will that look ok?
Comments (48)Sound advice. Clearly, this house design needs to be immediately scrapped and a new design created where the entire house is centered on the range hood. Food will be so yummy, clothes will never get dirty and the cat will be super happy...! That's a bit of a stretch...I'm allergic to cats. And the only way the clothes would never get dirty is if I can get my not-a-butlers-pantry beverage station tucked in a special place with a pass through to the porch. Then every meal will be perfection, the drinks will be served with flair, the kids will be mindful angels, and I just tug my left ear and the house becomes spotless....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
