Would you mix tan and gray, or leather and gray?

I'm redecorating my family room and for a number of other limitations and reasons, I am considering either a tan couch and a gray chair or a brown leather couch and a gray chair. Somehow I have it in my head that brown and gray are both "neutral-ish" colors that I should not combine. Do you agree? Would you combine upholstery in a room where one is brown (either tan fabric or brown leather) and one is gray? And if you have done it, do you have pictures?

"The gray on gray on gray trend has got to go," one designer pleads, while many others chimed in that the all-gray or all-white look is too sterile and cold for an everyday living. In fact, the majority of designers agreed that we're going to see less cool grays and whites in 2020. "Gray will move into an accent position, and no longer be a main color," one said.

What will replace it? "Warmer colors will be stronger than ever in the coming year," predicts our own major appliances and home design editor, Cindy Bailen, who says she finds all-gray rooms depressing. Both she and the Sherwin-Williams panel are hopeful for palettes that include beige, warmer neutrals, and greens (Behr's 2020 color of the year is a sage green shade).

Designers also say there will be more of a focus on more playful decorating, when it comes to both colors and textures. One expert responded, "I feel like design trends are now leaning toward a mix/match style where just about anything goes together and where things should definitely NOT match!"

I love the look of warm brown leather with gray upholstery. It offers a similar warmth and contrast that gray upholstery does with warm (not grayed) wood tones.

I would replace the master floor with the same flooring as in the rest of the house if that is hardwood, and then just worry about the guest room and even that would be nicer in the same flooring with just and area rug. But if you must go carpet I would do a darker gray in both rooms and use that gray for some accent colors in the guest room

Nice house! Since all your inspiration pictures are white, I think you should go for the white. We just painted our lake house with virtually identical tiles BM Cloud Cover and I LOVE it. It's got just enough warmth that the space doesn't feel cold, but it's not at all yellow and sometimes even goes grey. I can't get over how much lighter and brighter our space looks with the white walls. Attached pictures of our oak kitchen and the picture that made us choose it. I also love the idea of Sea Salt and Chantilly Lace. Chantilly is such a clean bright color, perfect for trim and cabinets. But honestly, I don't think you need to paint your cabinets. They'll be much improved after the walls aren't yellow anymore, fit with the lake house, and the money would be better spent on changing out the backsplash. Here's a guide on going grey when your floors etc are beige.
