Comments (22)I've mixed brands of polished nickel, and am very happy with how it's turned out. In one bath I have a Pottery Barn quad sconce (discontinued; got it on ebay), Kohler faucets, a Ginger Chelsea grab bar and knobs and tank lever from Lowes. We're finishing the master bath now, and have Hansgrohe Retroaktiv polished nickel faucets, another Ginger grab bar (love it), and the Asbury triple sconce from Restoration Hardware. The sconce is not big in scale at all, and is over a 42" vanity. We like both sconces with lights pointing up so we don't look at the bulbs. Three 60-watt bulbs is plenty, and we have two can lights near the toilet/shower area. I'm using hooks for towels instead of bars, and found polished nickel ones at Lowes that I really like; they match the drawer knobs and tank lever that I'm also using. They're all traditional in style, and all go together really well. I don't think anyone would criticize that they are not from the same company. Good luck! Comments (14)I have a question about this for the long time people here. There was an older single lady here who had recently done her kitchen when I first found this forum back in the beginning of '07 or so. She had the Edlund knife holder in the counter and formica or thermofoil cabs (some color), if I remember correctly. She had the rail system and had organized every square inch of her kitchen with careful details. I think I recall use of pegboard as well. If I could only remember her name, I'd love to find her kitchen again. It would help anyone watching this post to see hers in action. I was dazzled by how well thought out her layout and user friendly her kitchen was. I don't think I had discovered how to clip posts back then... sigh... Thanks for any info you may have!...See MoreFSBO companies/websites/booklets, how to choose?
Comments (10)Mary, I had a friend in college who went to a local casino, and ended up losing about 7-8 thousand dollars. Instead of cutting his losses, he went back to the casino to try to win back the money he lost. By the time, it was all said and done, he ended up losing over 50 thousand dollars. You don't want to compound your loss, where you end up even losing more money in the long run because you were trying to recover your initial loss. 17,700 sounds like a lot of money but let's break down those numbers to see if you'll really save as much money as you think. If you go a pure FSBO, where you don't use the MSL, you're going to reach a more limited number of buyers. The less number of possible buyers that see it, the more leverage the potential buyer has because there's less competition and he can try to lowball the offer. When buyers see a FSBO, they expect to share in the savings and so you're not going to end up keeping the full 17,700. Or, if you go to a discount broker, where it gets listed on MSL, you're going to end up having to give half of that amount to the buyer's agent anyways. Plus, you run into the problems that lots of agents will steer away their clients from a FSBO. That's why I said that in the end, once you factor in that you'll probably get a lower price on the offer, you might save 1-2% of the commission, not the full 17,700. And, in your situation, in only a few months, you'll be paying for two places at the same time if you can't sell your home right away. That payment will also cut into any potential saving....See MoreVintage Lamps, Items Repurposed into Lamps etc; Please share your pics
Comments (37)Wishing I had pix - my mother's home is full of lamps made from antiques: a large coffee grinder, wooden planes (the carpenter's type) & several kerosene lamps like the 1 pictured above - a couple have dark green glass shades, which look very nice w/ the brass. My dad made them all back in the 50s & early 60s, when it was all the rage, apparently. My parents did a lot of antiquing back in the 50s - they lived in Long Island & would drive out into the country on the weekend to auctions. Here's a pic(not mine) of what the wood planes look like - the lamps have brass tubing & drum shades covered w/ natural burlap......See More- 4 years ago
