It might have a common name of foxtail but a lot of plants go by that name. I just came in from pulling a bunch of it out of my St Augustine lawn. If you can find the center of the plant, it really comes out easy with a Weed Hound tool. My St Aug just got 4 inches of rain this week and made the centers hard to find, so I did a lot of hand pulling.

I'm 90% certain that it's what bp said above - K-31 fescue (I think it's short for Ken31 - nothing like a little marketing to trick the old consumer, but that's another topic). My understanding of this grass is that it's "contractor grade" - very often found in generic grass seed mixes sold in the past. I'm willing to be corrected, but I believe it's much less common now, as improved varieties of fescues have become available. I have several patches - it blends fairly well, but can be noticable once you a.) know what it is and b.)becomes a big enough "clump" that it starts growing "sideways". I haven't heard of it spreading, much less aggressive spreading. Because of its horizontal growth, it may appear to be getting bigger, but I suspect the "root zone" has stayed the same, and it's just the blades of grass that get longer w/o being cut. If you're just trying for a green grass, it's not all bad - even in the middle of our high humidity, high heat summers, I don't recall it ever going dormant (i.e. not green)like bp alluded to - but his "droughts" are much more severe that what you or I would normally experience. If you want a uniform looking lawn, than R/U or the traditional mechanical method of foot and spade for removal are likely your best bet. Around here, KBG sod is about $1 / sq ft. At this point in the growing season, I think that would be your easiest bet. Yes the roots may grow deep on the existing K-31, but even if a few blades manage to poke back up through the new sod, I would think it would be a while before you even noticed they came back. Hello, I recently built a new house in MN. While we are in a developed area, it used to be farm fields and I am struggling to battle this plant. It really sprouted up in July and now it seems to be all over my yard, which is .92 of an acre and getting pretty difficult to handle. I've tried to kill it with Round-Up and Spectracide, which do the trick, but then more keep coming and the dead patches are getting bigger and bigger. Any suggestions on what it is and how to get rid of it permanently?

You would need to keep repeating the RoundUp, every time you see a sprout. I have had good luck with soil solarization in getting rid of bermuda. Takes some time but it does work.
