I doubt it's survival. The garage over the winter is tricky because it still needs to be lightly watered while wintering over.

Still, green is good ( no credit to gordon gecko). Patience and adequate water/light for starters. No sudden big moves. Check back here if more good signs appear.

I don't see anything green on it. It looks totally dried up. I don't see and red growth buds either. Sorry but I think it's dead.

When you winter potted roses in a garage they need to be up off the concrete and watered about once a month. Roses really do best, and winter best, planted in the ground. Potted roses in cold zones can be very tricky.

Take a pruner and start chopping off from the top until you see live tissue. If you don't find any as you get to the soil line, it may be time to get a new one. Next time remember to water it a little over the winter. Another option is to use a bigger pot and leave it outside. A third option is to treat it like a houseplant, bring it in and give it a sunny window and keep it in active phase.

Thanks so much for all your responses, as some of you had asked I only water a couple of times this entire winter and as i said i had no idea since it is my first time. But i will keep in mind for the next time. I am not going to give up and try pruning it to see if i can see a live tissue somewhere.

That's the attitude. It's hard, but not impossible to overwinter them. Was this unheated garage attached to your house? If not, it's unlikely to ever work in your zone. As suggested, raise them off the floor and use a bigger pot which will give the roots more insulation as well. You could also wrap the pot in bubble wrap or something insulative. That, plus water will give them a fighting chance. I've done this for a few years now, but will admit to some losses this year, but only because I didn't realize outside air was entering the space due to some structural changes. I'll be fixing that.

Any chance you can put a rose in the ground?

I am guessing you didn't water it during the winter months. It's gone, no coming back. It's time to get another one.

Vaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley: yes, we moved in last year and so this was my first rose plant and it was doing pretty well until winter. And yes, i had kept it on the cement surface; i just only thought of keeping it near light but didnt realize that even when it went dormant, i had to water it. Thanks for your timely suggestions, will bare in mind for the upcoming ones.

Just, fyi, when dormant they don't really even need light. Some folks even cover theirs with sheets to keep it out. Stick around here and you'll find all sorts of suggestions for other roses, too. Don't be put off by one sad event.
