I had the builder use a stain which is possibly as close to weathered wood as possible on the fence as well as barn door style garage doors. There's also a pair of French looking shutters(rounded at the top)on a second story small window above the front door in the same stain. With a sprinkler system as well as rain, the weather color stain is ideal. Any other wood features on the house should be re-done in the same stain color, whatever color you use.

There is a company in PA called Prizm fence you might want to try. I am not sure how vinyl fence will hold up over the years with the cold New York weather. The plastic might start to get brittle. Yes, the neighbor whose fence you see was fine with our fence; he's complimented us on it more than once. Of course I'll ask his permission before going on his property, and I'm sure he'll be fine with us needing to be on his property to complete the staining. The reason for the tall fence was the neighbor on the other side. She brought in two pit bulls who don't get adequate exercise; she leaves them outside while she's away at work and that's the only exercise they get. She has a chain link fence so her dogs go nuts when I and/or my dogs are in my yard. Her dogs act like they want to rip my face off and it's only a matter of time before they figure out they can jump over her 4' chain link fence. The fence installer suggested a 6' fence because he and his crew were concerned that the pit bulls were going to attack them when he came to give an estimate. In staining the fence, I've found multiple problems with the fence - so many boards have warped - and I'm having problems getting the installer back out to fix the issues. He did such a good job with my neighbor's picket fence that I thought he knew what he was doing, but apparently that wasn't the case.

We had an acre that bordered on watershed land. That land could not be built on so we had herds of deer. They caused so much damage, not only to the gardens but actually jumped in our in-ground pool and cracked the walls and the whole pool had to be replaced. We put in a 8 ft chain link fence around the property. We had to get a permit to put it in. We used black chain link so it was hard to see with all the trees and shrubs. We did not put it in front, just the back yard which was about an acre. It worked. It was expensive, but it worked well. We had 4 gates, with locks. It was almost invisible. When we sold our house, 10 yrs ago, we realized that fence held up for over 30 yrs without any problems. The new buyers were thrilled because they had dogs. Now, living in Florida, we put up a 6 ft stockade fence around the back of our property. I regret doing this. In 8 yrs it looks like crap. I'm debating pulling it out for chain link. Trouble with chain link, it doesn't give privacy unless you have lots of shrubs and trees growing along it. Florida is not NY. Jane
