Not really decorating, but want your advice on fence stain

This is a patio we wanted to enclose into a courtyard.

Just finished the fence part.

Dh wants to stain it a dark brown to match the back deck. We'll also stain the front Trex deck to match the back.

I would like a lighter color, darker than the natural wood it is now, but not quite as red as this one.

maybe even a stain that matches the greige we will be painting the siding.

The only problem I see with the griege stain is too much of the same color, especially in the front of the house where there is more siding. And either way I like, it won't match the existing deck and arbor in the back yard which is visible past the gate.

What do you think?

Yes! I love our gray porcelain 12" x 12" tile. It's imported Italian tile: Granitogres from Casalgrande (distributed by Daltile) in an oddly named color they call "Arizona," I believe. But it's a very hue-neutral gray--no brown or beige tones in it at all, contrary to its "earthy sounding" name. It's a beautiful, concrete-looking color with flecks of grays and white. Very modern-looking. If we're successful in matching the grout color, it'll look like a continuous, concrete-like floor from a distance. And, yes, I was initially attracted to solid-surface materials for the same reasons. Low-maintenance! It's a tough call, but I'm so happy with the Granitogres porcelain. I'm not a big fan of grout lines either, but we're jumping through hoops to match the tile color as closely as possible in the grout to achieve our desired aesthetic effect. If your heart's set on solid-surface, then by all means, get it. But, I think you have enough of an idea of what you want that you're likely to be pleased with whatever material on which you finally decide. Good luck!

"When we built our house and I was choosing paint colors I must have seemed agitated because at one point dh said "let's just paint everything white" and I shut up real fast and didn't consult him again! Fast forward 5 years and the one room I did paint off white I decided to paint a color. He said " No! You'll paint it some yucky green!" Huh? He has many times said how nice my decorating is and is very proud when he gets compliments on the house. Not that he had much to do with any of it!" When DH and I started dating, he had a new build. All the walls were white and he liked it that way. I started having him watch decorating shows while we were building another house. Thought that Matt and Sherri would be a gentle introduction and then moved on to some of the before and after shows. Now, if I haven't finished painting a room, he'll ask "When are we getting rid of these white walls?" :)

Thanks for the ideas.. and I forgot to mention I had a furniture refinisher quote $1900 to refinish the set!!!! The set was given to us, 20 some years ago, and I can not for the life of me find anything like it on the internet, to price new... It is a great sturdy table and chairs... kids can't tip those puppies over... but the photo does not show the heat damage and water damage on the table top.. it does need to be sanded. I just posted a question over in woodworking to see if someone can identify the wood...walnut maybe? Thanks for the ideas...

Advice about staining a fence next to neighbor's fence?

Yes, the neighbor whose fence you see was fine with our fence; he's complimented us on it more than once. Of course I'll ask his permission before going on his property, and I'm sure he'll be fine with us needing to be on his property to complete the staining. The reason for the tall fence was the neighbor on the other side. She brought in two pit bulls who don't get adequate exercise; she leaves them outside while she's away at work and that's the only exercise they get. She has a chain link fence so her dogs go nuts when I and/or my dogs are in my yard. Her dogs act like they want to rip my face off and it's only a matter of time before they figure out they can jump over her 4' chain link fence. The fence installer suggested a 6' fence because he and his crew were concerned that the pit bulls were going to attack them when he came to give an estimate. In staining the fence, I've found multiple problems with the fence - so many boards have warped - and I'm having problems getting the installer back out to fix the issues. He did such a good job with my neighbor's picket fence that I thought he knew what he was doing, but apparently that wasn't the case.

I like the greige too. Hardscape should just be a background. The surrounding plants should be the stars. The greige makes an excellent background for plants.

There's not really a door, or gate into the courtyard. We made one of the panels removable so we could get things in and out, but it's not accessible from the outside.

I don't like the way cedar ages naturally. It usually discolors near the bottom first and looks really tacky for a long time before the whole things grays, and then it's not a pretty gray, IMO.

That's cedar? I thought it was pine.

I like the third one best, or paint it the same color as either your siding or trim.

Yes, I like the third one the best and the dark brown the least. I don't like naturally aged fences either.

Ok, we're all agreed that the gray stain is best. So how does it look with the posts and shutters in front that are also going to be rough cedar?

Oh, the fence was gray? I thought you said greige. The picture is hard to see it real well with the shadows.

Can the posts be stained the same as the fence?

Greige is just a shade of gray isn't it? The color I picked is Stonehenge Greige, but it looks like a dirty gray to me. Maybe I should say an earthy gray.

I like the greige because I think it sets the brick off really nicely. I don't care for the brown.

I had the builder use a stain which is possibly as close to weathered wood as possible on the fence as well as barn door style garage doors. There's also a pair of French looking shutters(rounded at the top)on a second story small window above the front door in the same stain.

With a sprinkler system as well as rain, the weather color stain is ideal.

Any other wood features on the house should be re-done in the same stain color, whatever color you use.
