What to do when your AC freezes up?
Comments (14)I hear what both of you are saying about quility of material changing with time. It's invitable as I see it, when seer ratings came into the lime light, mfgr A reduced wall thickness to better transfer heat, mfgr B&C followed and the race was on. It go's on and on with cost cutting to remain competive. What is inexcusable is quility of work done in the field. I noticed the biggest turn in the early 90s when EPA got involved then licenseing hvac contractors became required. I leave each to his own while judging EPA but here's a fact about hvac license in Texas (at least until I retired 8 years ago). Unlimited locations in every city in Texas can operate under the license of one person. A retorical question, does anyone see that kind of licensing as benificial to consumers? Conincidently there's an active thread over in home repair about licensing the trades if anyone care's to take a peek. Many mom and pop hvac companies were run out of business by those two developments. The horse is starting to ride the man and the horse is getting fatter by the day. Rant over. For those interested in finer points about evap coils damaged by ice. Copper "work hardens" and become's less pliable each time it's bent or otherwise stressed. Repeated freeze thaw cycles progressivly work hardens tube until cracks develop. What you might ask can the average tech do with that knowledge? If Jim bend's a line set then change's his mind, straighten's it out and rebend's only to have Joe show up to tell him it's wrong and once more straighten and rebend yet again, chances are the pipe will collaspe and/or break. If only Joe knew how to "aneal" the line it might be restored to a state of pliability saving the price of a new line set. At minium as Austin said the compressor is harmed during freeze up and fixing it asap is prudent....See MoreNew Central system condenser loud
Comments (10)Thanks much. Actually I looked inside the unit and it does have a blanket already. Now one thing that is confusing to me. If we go to emergency heat isnt that the same thing as just using the furnace to heat the house like we have been for the past 18 years which is gas? I guess I am just wondering how the bill will be higher if we go emergency heat. Isn't it basically the same thing? The unit we had installed is really supposed to be high end. Basically what my wife is hearing is the furnace fan in the basement running all the time coupled with the condenser outside the house. Perhaps we can go emergency heat through the winter, spring and fall and in the summer turn off the emergency heat. Again thanks...See MoreNeighbor's air conditioner makes a loud humming sound
Comments (31)This just happened to me. The sound is blaringly loud and low, and it woke me up around 6am and lasted for about 10 minutes. It sounds like it's coming from the apartment above, and it's loudest in the bathroom (no windows, it's in the center of my apartment). When it shuts off it sounds like a switch is flipped and it powers down quickly. It basically permeates my entire little apartment, but the sound is also really loud by the front door so it's hard to even say where it is coming from. I thought it might be a blender or something but it's not as loud in the kitchen. It drives me insane, only happens early morning so I assume my upstairs neighbor is using something that causes it. I thought maybe a shaver?!?! But nobody's shaver is THAT loud. Everyone talks about "the hum" and electronics, but this sound is so LOUD and coming from within the building. It's not coming from the windows....See MoreLoud A/C after moving duct
Comments (10)I'm not sure how well equipped you are to seriously discuss this but we shall see. You said "But apparently when they dig in, there was a t-joint (??) so they didn’t even need to dig. They just sealed the T and filled in the hole with cement. The new vent is now on a dining room wall that has garage on the other side". What do you mean "APPARENTLY" ? I need to know if there is a tee or not unless you intend to rely on apparently rather than certainty. What size was the pipe on each of 3 joints? Which was sealed and where do remaining 2 joints go? You said they sealed the tee then you said there's a new vent on dining room wall but you never said where new vent originates in system. Tell me where, how, what size pipe and how many feet of new pipe was installed for new vent on dining room wall? The reason I know air flow was restricted by whatever was done is from years of experience of what causes excessive noise at a vent when there was little or none previously....See MoreJosh Prince
