Shared Kid's Bedroom with passthrough room

I have a strange-shaped room in my house that both my kids are using/will use as their bedroom (yellow in the attached floorplan). My kids are 3 and 4 months, and I want them to share this room essentially forever. I think the strange shape - a "boring" square room with a neat passthrough room - is kind of cool, and would love ideas to make it even neater for them and to maximize the space! Right now the kids are sleeping in a crib and a toddler bed (which used to be a crib). We've talked about trying bunk beds in a few years, but for now it might actually be easier to use the two rooms as separate spaces for them since the little guy still wakes up at night. I'd love other ideas!

commenting to follow! makes sense to me that the front room is the bedroom and the long room is the playroom, while the kids are still small. as long as you can hear all the way back there and easily keep tabs on them?

plus an idea for when the kids are older: put a bunk bed way back in the skinny room. maybe even something custom that goes from wall-to wall, like a loft (they would enter at the foot rather than the side). when I was a kid, I would have loved to have a "sleep pod" like this. at 5'9", it's wide enough for a twin mattress, plus some kind of cubby for books, etc, off to the side. put a wall mounted lamp in each. then the bigger room could be their study / den / hangout. maybe even with a futon for sleepovers.

Well, if you can afford that setup, I would plan on the girls each having their own clothes, and simply borrowing if the other sister is ok with it. Having five daughters, I know all about sharing rooms, closets, clothes, bathrooms, etc. For example, my first two were fifteen months apart and were best friends through high school (in the same grade.) However, the younger one was a slob and older onewasn't, and they had different tastes in clothes. The younger was careless with the other's clothes. Her sister would have hated to have to share everything with her. My point is that I would give them each their own closet, since they will likely want to have their own clothes, anyway. Then, they can learn to ask to borrow an item. I also wonder why you are including a tub and shower in a children's bath? Even though the bathroom is a nice size, I believe it will feel cramped. I think I would give each child her own vanity and toilet, and include a shower/tub combination in a separate middle room. And, when your kids are teens, you might regret giving them their own doors to the outside! :)

Thanks for the responses. My daughter has a full sized bed, a nightstand, a longer dresser (under 5 feet) and a tall dresser (2 1/2 ft wide). I will post a pic of the layout later when I get back from finishing my Christmas shopping. Oaktown, in your 5ft wide bath, does the tub sit on the exterior wall, so the window is in the tub area? That is one of the options if I go with the 5ft wide and keep the extra foot of space in her bedroom. I don't love the idea of a window in the bath- and with the shower curtain drawn (they like shower curtains vs. glass) It probably won't be effective. If I go with the 6ft width, then the bath will be on the long wall, and the window will not be in the tub area, it alongside the tub.

I know you will hate me for this, but please understand my view point. I am an old house LOVER! I also spent twenty years as a banker trying to talk people into understanding that their future home purchase had to be about love....and practicality. When you are in love with a house you think that the fact that it slapped around the last owners was likely because they were bad owners...they probably deserved it because they didn't do the maintenance you would do to keep it in check. You justify the little issues like the third eye as something minor instead of realizing that a third eye is not actually a normal thing and will require some seriously expensive custom lenses. You turn a wet basement into a couple puddles.... Ten years,..no lets make it five if you get the house....if you find that my pessimistic attitude was totally incorrect and your home turned out to be perfect beyond compare...please tell me I am wrong so I can learn a lesson. But if on the other hand my gazillion years of trying to make people understand that they should buy a home they love....but should equally involve their brains and heart in the equation turns out to make some sense in your potential chris brown like situation.....well be sure to share that valuable experience as well so that others can learn from you...and make light of your experience because "that will never happen to them". I tried to buy the egg and I farm as a young wife ohhhhh so many years ago thinking that a house with walls falling down and a tree growing in the living room just needed our tender and inexperienced care to bring it back.....the bank laughed...thank god!

Bunk beds would save on space. Or, the beds can go in an L-shape against the walls. Organize the closet with Elfa shelves etc. (We bought ours from The Container Store) Under the bed storage for the toys. Some people like to remove the doors of the closet and put up a curtain. (I am not a fan of this look, but I see how it can be useful in a tight space) With a boy and girl, I would go green, yellow, blue and red, depending on what you and they like. Can you post pictures?

Oh a futon could be fun!! Sadly the bedrooms are all on a separate floor from the rest of the house, so it isn’t a great play space for the three year old right now (more toy storage than play room). But maybe soon!

well, at least you have some really good storage for the kids! that room could be turned into a "toy library". line one entire wall with a bunch of bookcases, and some bins at the bottom. they can come in, "return" a toy, browse, and select a new one. then back to downstairs to play.

anchor the cases to the wall. the reachable shelves could be for toys (they could have a step stool), and the upper shelves could be for baby supplies, off-season clothes, maybe even misc household storage. something boring enough they wouldn't want to climb to.

The long skinny space is a CLOSET, not a legal bedroom. A bedroom may not be accessible solely from another bedroom. That’s not legal.

I don't count it as a separate bedroom. Both rooms are one "bedroom" in a real estate listing, but I'm not sure why it matters? They kids are sharing that square footage whether you count it as one room or two.

Nobody said it was a bedroom. She clearly states it's a "neat passthrough" room that she would like ideas for.

I think when the kids get older, it could be a great little homework, craft, reading room that they would love to "hide-away" in. While the kids are so little, though, it's mostly good for toy and book storage.
