I would keep the kitchen. Extra fridge always comes in handy from time to time. I would also consider some how putting a day bed with trundle in if you have the room with a smaller table. Guest quarters comes to mind. I love being a guest, but I also love having my own little efficient room to return to at night. Also getting my own breakfast and lunch and snack foods, so that I am invited back :-)

I would paint all the cabinets black and the door, keeping the walls white.

I used a free fridge from another property of mine and my contractor got an earful for doing the layout the way he did. I’m guessing because the bathroom is directly behind the sink so he was avoiding doing anything more plumbing wise? Idk. I am a professional trainer and there is living quarters upstairs in the loft for an assistant trainer and barn help, so that is why keeping a kitchen is necessar.y. Does it need to be this big when it’s a barn? No. But I will be living in here for at least another year and I’m hating it.

As far as paint colors I was thinking SW Iron Ore for the doors and Alabaster for the walls or cabinets

Oh also, my husband had thought of maybe filling the empty space where the stools are with a built in breakfast nook so we can get rid of the huge table?

i would definitiely draw a color from nature. green or blue. i would hestiate to do black doors, its so stark/commanding and would draw your eye away from the calming/nature color of your cabs. ... i would everything in a monotone or do the walls 2-3 lighter or darker than the cabs.

keep the ceiling as is

go with a counte depth frigerator, that one is just too big for the space. sell on CL or another site.

i would not want a breakfast bar facing the wall. i love a table. maybe use a bench on the wall - table -2 chairs.

incorporate some open barnwood live edge shelves

re-arrange appliances, getting the stove away from the wall, frig where stove is?, better flow.

i am sure there is much more u can do to make it fab!, but be sure u will definitely be using it enough to justify the cost. if cost is not an issue, again the possibilities are endless.

Green or blue shade on the cabinets. Keeping the walls white is traditional and would look great. If you need the large fridge for overflow from the house,then keep it, but a smaller one would be more logical in that space.

The big kitchen table seems a staple of the farm/barn kitchen. Again, consider takin the time to grab some inspiration images.

I would keep it white/light since there isn't a ton of natural light in the space and the fridge is so big and gray. Since the ceiling is wood, which looks great, it darkens the room a little. I like it the way it is!

The single most feared thing in a stable is fire. The stove against the wall is a terrifying fire hazard. And a Code violation.

First off, your little one is precious. Secondly, I have to agree with M Miller. I think the appliances could be better arranged. Move the cabinet that's to the right of the fridge over where the stove and smaller cabinet are now. Add more open shelves. Then put the stove where the fridge is, the smaller cabinet next to it, then the fridge on the end of the run.

Yikes I didn’t even think about the stove placement being a fire hazard. We had to pull permits for everything and the Inspector never said anything but I can see why it’s a worry

In your inspiration photos (loved every one of them) I think the paint color on the lower right corner could be subtle and lovely (#9). We also have a farmhouse and I would want every kitchen you chose. Your little kitchen can be super charming. I can’t believe the inspector didn’t notice the fire hazard! Yikes.

It's a pretty cool kitchen for a barn. What will you do with it in the future?

I love your inspiration images. They are all very, very neutral in color. They all have a great table or an island. I love the vintage table look too.

In terms of the scope of work, are you interested in improving your layout? Or are you just looking for paint?

On the color side, you have natural wood, neutral paint, and the black doors you want. That checks most of the boxes. I would consider freshening things up with a coat of white paint on the cabinets. But if you can give us a rough layout of the space and an idea of the size of the cabinets, we could possibly try to re-arrange what you’ve got in a better layout as well.

Well I’d love to improve the layout depending on how much it will cost. For sure repainting the cabinets and walls And moving the stove. I will take some measurements tomorrow. Here’s a pic of one idea of the arrangement

That looks good. Fridge is easily accessible from the rest of the space, stove has work space on either side, and clean-up zone is separate from cooking zone. Much better!

Briana, that’s great. Can you tell us the sizes of your current cabinets? Are you amenable to buying a couple of new ones if necessary?

eam44-that's a stock photo from the internet. I'm in SW Florida near Fort Myers. Believe me when I tell you it feels like paradise after living most of my life near Buffalo, NY!

What if sink and stove were switched? Flow wise: fridge stuff -> sink for washing -> prep counter between sink and stove -> stove/oven for cooking. Will you have a MW in this space? Good luck!

@eam44 i will measure them, and yes, totally ok with buying more if I need to....although I am wondering if I’ll have a hard time finding ones that have the same wood detail. I love the pattern they have even though it’s not totally on trend.

@Gcubed, funny you say that because that is how I originally had it but put the sink if the same wall it’s on because all the plumbing is already there. idk how difficult that would be to change. And yes on the microwav, I have kids haha so a m MW is a must. I’m thinking of trying to hide or incorporate into some sort of cabinet? Do they make cabinets for them?

I’m not a pro, but I think your layout is pretty perfect. Moving the sink is expensive, so probably not worth it. For me, having the fridge near the stove makes sense. Have you de died on a color?

I’m thinking SW alabaster for the shiplap and SW repose gray or anew gray for the cabinets

Regarding black doors (and more?): rather than black black, consider historic, very dark green like what’s often called Charleston Green. It acts like black, totally neutral, but is softer, more nuanced and is historically significant

With the wood ceilings putting a color on the walls will just darken the space. I think keep it white. My go-to white is Ben Moore's "Chantilly Lace": it's bright without being too blue or too yellow.

Are you going to rent this out as an AirB&B or just keep it as a guest house/space? If so, you don't need a large fridge. You could just get counter height fridge and freezer and put where the fridge is now, or on that far wall where you now have the 2 stools and build up more work space where the fridge is.

If ya want to paint the doors a color that's find. Maybe navy instead of black. Or even red - kinda goes with a farmhouse....

Your color ideas sound good for a barn kitchen. And unless the ceiling is in terrible shape, I would leave it as is.

What stands out to me in your pictures is the 2 different cabinet door profiles...also that the uppers don't go to the ceiling. I feel like some new cabinet doors in shaker style and moving the stove over to the right of the refrigerator and base cabinet already there would be a big improvement. Some dark walnut floating shelves, dark base cabinets (you mentioned Iron Ore...or how about BM Hale Navy) and a clean white for the uppers unless you ditch them completely for shelves. A butcher block countertop stained dark walnut... love the ceiling as is....I would wait to paint the exterior doors until the rest is done...then you will know if it is going to be too dark for the space. I would paint the lowers black, as well as the French doors. Leave the uppers white as well as the ship lap. Change out the counters for butcher block, and tie in a few
live edge shelves so that’s it’s not all white cabinetry as uppers. You can use silver boat pulls for the cabinetry, or even gold would be nice. Do you have space for a return beside the fridge to use those lovely barstools?
Love the modern farmhouse look. You can accessorize with some glass or ceramic jars, baskets and some greenery.
