Painting red brick fireplace

I could really use and advise. I decided to update our red brick fireplace, but it is not going as easy as I expected.
I am attaching original fireplace that I whitewashed. I didn't like the look so I repainted it. Now fireplace looks ok, but doesn't go well with the rest of the room. I would like to make changes to fireplace when it is still all taped up.
For reference: wall color BM Classical Gary 200% strength, trim around the house BM White Dove. Mantle and shelves BM Charcoal Slate and last paint on the brick is BM Gray Owl with tint of Charcoal Slate.

Comments (11)Absolutely no regrets here. Our fireplace was UGLY. It was terracotta colored brick pavers and were not staggered like a normal brick pattern, just lined up in a row on top of each other. I painted it the same color as the walls ( Olympic's Ponytail) after I primed it. It is not an eyesore anymore and everyone loves the transformation. It is amazing how it made my dark stained builtins look richer. I had thought about painting them white before I painted the fireplace, now there is no need. Comments (1)While a lot of people are painting their red brick fireplaces, mine is actually starting to grow on me. I love those with beautiful white mantels and surrounds. I'm at a loss to how I can make that happen with mine. The hearth is very thick. The brick edge of the fireplace is not very wide, so not sure how I would do the surround and have it look right. I've seen a few pictures here and there, but none of the fireplaces are built like mine. Any ideas? We have an open staircase. We have to remove the stair railing to install hardwood flooring. The thought of sanding and painting 96 balusters and 9 larger posts, in addition to the base and handrail.....exhausts me just thinking about it. I sanded the top rail and bought General Finishes Java Gel Stain to try on it. Looked horrible on whatever kind of wood this is. Any ideas that would go with a white fireplace surround and darker hardwood floors? I like iron stair railing, but imagine that would be very costly....See MoreShould I paint my red brick fireplace?
Comments (23)I would question someone's sense if they told me to paint the inside of my fireplace brick WHITE! *SMH* Can you imagine how ugly that would be after burning a fire just one time? Ridiculous! The only reason the red brick stands out is because you have nothing in the fireplace. Where is the set of logs? Where is the fireplace screen that's supposed to go in front of the fireplace so that nothing pops and flies onto the floor? I agree that if you do not use it, then put some decor inside of there. Comments (10)Well, I've painted the bricks and area above the shelf. It really helped lighten up the corner area. I'm not sure if I will paint the shelf or leave as is. Lesson learned: the area above the shelf was wood and at first I used a satin paint to match the trim. I felt there was too much shine from the ceiling lights, so I painted over with a matte finish and like it much better. No more glare. I understand where Fori is coming from. I still don't love the fireplace. While painting the bricks I had covered the surround tile to protect them. And I really liked the look of the painted brick w the tile hidden. However, when I pulled off the protective cover to reveal the surround, I felt the same sense of "ugh" I had before painting. Not only is the fireplace dated, but the materials are not cohesive. And painting the brick doesn't change how odd I think the surround looks. That said, I'm glad I painted as it is less dark/dreary. Also, when we are finally able to tear down and replace with a more modern design, the new fireplace will be in the same general light color. It's nice to be able to visualize how the lighter color plays out as we decorate around the area. Any advice on the shelf? Paint the same color as trim? Or try to stain darker--like an espresso? Unfortunately, I can't easily remove to replace the shelf. Sanding would be challenging. Also, there is a groove on the top of the shelf--not sure why it is there (??)....See MoreJolanta M.
