Does laminated glass look different to the naked eye? Is it equally energy effient etc? Any difference other than cost? What R rating do you recommend for a climate mild in winter, hot hot in summer? I am pushed to make this change because the windows are not tight at all and lose too much AC in summer impossible to cool properly on 95+ degree days. I think Milly Rey is saying what I suspect also: at some point, your house was remodeled and someone removed some walls and or elements that were intrinsic to the MCM style. The pony wall is probably not original to the house, and the railing around the stair well is definitely not original. The bi-fold doors and those contemporary white tiles are likely replacements as well. Here are some MCM entryways that are a more true to the design of that era. To emulate these, you'll want to consider installing some veritcal dividers on top of the pony wall or instead of the pony wall. Change out the railing, and put back simple slab sliding doors on the closet. Please also consider getting a new door that has some glass so that you have some natural light coming through, or, at the bare minimum, paint the door (inside and out) a bright cheerful color. Maybe one that you can use as an accent color other places in your home. A slate floor entryway was very common in homes of this era. It might be worth a consultation with an architect that specializes in restoring MCM homes. You may have some other alterations that were done to your home over time, and if you can restore it, it will probably greatly increase the value of your home. And if you're an MCM lover, it's just the right thing to do. Actually it's been awhile since I started this posting. I got new windows, they are taupe. It blends with the area painted underneath the window. I've planted native shrubs and perennials in the front garden - it gives a more ''natural'' look, with various green groundcovers instead of mulch. I'm a fan of native plants. Gives the house a casual look.

thanks! kendallinsd I think those window changes to the bedrooms would make a big difference to the curb appeal. by the way, I am not against painting brick. if done right, it will be fine. however, yours is a nice muted reddish tone. I think what's not working is that there's too much contrast between the brick and siding, breaking up the shapes. the mockups houssaon and I did for you look better because it gives your house a more cohesive look. I also encourage keeping (or restoring) that pergola. again, it's part of the midcentury shape of that house that makes it special. but like I suggested before, a wood pillar might look better there. have fun. post pics as you improve this adorable home!
